Thanks, yes carb freezing can be a real issue without decent hot air coming back off the manifold. I've also got a heater to fit to my Weber which I think helps quite a bit. I'll get pics up when the carb goes on.

Car now has full new suspension/wishbones/ mainly Febi Bilstien bushes at the front struts all de rusted/Rustoleum paint for boge inserts and GSF 40mm lowering springs see this thread..

Carb was rebuilt during a late night Nascar race..



The door pod builds have been a real challenge, resorted to more woodwork and Pink Grip adhesive which is commonly used by your average tradesman..

Screwed and bonded on without speaker grills quite pleased but they touch the lower shelf on the passenger side and a bit close on the other

Tweeters on dash..

Hmmmm Would like the car to be a bit more nose down (might be tyres being lower profile on the front)

Probably the cleanest the car has been newly refurbished mirrors fitted. Paint will be cut/polished once I sort various rust spots..

Looks good. Are you going to get another one and called it Redemption?
Have you thought about mountin the tweeters in the dash? IT's not that difficult, sounds just as good and looks almost original.
Door pods look good, mine were the bane of my life

Excellent job done on the door pods.
Bodywork has come up a treat with just a quick wash, I thought you had waxed it aswell.

Next on the agenda oil pickup cleaning and new sump fitting, rocker cover cleaning and painting with rubber gasket and hopefully Weber carb.

Got this stuff just over £30 from Veedubmachine.. rocker gasket has correct studs in the bag..

Don't forget nice bendy extension and lots and lots of swear words when trying to remove / replace the two awkward bolts nearest the gearbox.

My baby is going in to get her rear wheel bearings done on Wednesday morning.

The Sump was dropped to check the oil pick-up. There were just a few specs of dirt in the gauze so was cleaned up with white spirit (no pics covered on many other threads) and new sump from Veedubmachine was fitted really just the ease of being able to fit a nice clean part. By no means as good a fit as OEM but seems fine..


Cam cover was painted again after a previous petrol leak stripping the last paint rubber gasket and shoulder-less studs fitted..


Weber Carb was fitted which as ever had a few teething problems (still don't know if it was dirt in the carb, air leak or something like HT leads which were replaced)


Heater valve was replaced as it was stuck in hot position Mole grips did the job not too bad actually. Old one about to be removed..


Replacement Upper console with no stereo theft damage (Thanks OMR) Gauge fitted but not wired, not figured out how?..


Borrowed the use of a friends Rolls Royce of Mowers and felt suitably lower than his vehicle..


Noticed a few issues needing addressed
Coolant leak from underside of inlet manifold where I believe there is probably a perished O-ring and water flange has been leaking..



So next will be body work preparing for winter. Going to buy a bunch of products from Bilt Hamber for protecting under side and paint protection once I deal with some areas of rust.

So been driving a good hundred miles+ with the Weber and all is good. Although what really stands out is the need for a gear linkage kit and not so sure about the state of the clutch/ and or clutch cable. I know I can source these parts if needs be.

Anyway when I'm off Uni for Christmas I'll be fitting a reburbished rear beam which will involve tank and filler neck removal and general overhauling to prevent further rust.

Poly sport rear beam bushes from Rally Design.. more bushes to come from VW heritage for ARB.


Whilst off the road will deal with rust and preventing rust with these products..
UB is a high quality underseal with waxoil type protection
S-50 is like waxoil but again meant to be way better.
Also shampoo with no waxes, Polish and Auto balm which again has rust preventing qualities, gets into the pores of chips/scratches etc

Well dead for now until I can hopefully deal with certain neglected areas of the car.
Clutch was going then the front down pipe sheared off because of rust

So need to do the following (not much time between studies is the real problem)..

Fit new inlet manifold gasket and O ring
Fit new water flange and O ring
Possibly check and replace thermostat and housing whilst I'm at it

Fit new downpipe with new C-clips and gasket ring

Take gearbox out/assess condition and no doubt fit new clutch and release bearing. I have the option of two spare boxes ( Cheers OMR mate )but they might pose issues with electrical connection and even drive shaft incompatibilities. No doubt I'll get to a plan Z with this.

Do linkage overhaul with VW parts
Fit new heater fan through the scuttle side!

Examine possible bad brake pipes and replace if needs be.
Sort a fuel line that has possibly damaged the steering gaiter.
Deal with various rust that concerns me, might involve welding but hope I can deem it good enough till September when I finish Uni

If things are going well I might go ahead and do the rear beam swap, get the tank treated and filler swapped over. I was planning this before with a whole bunch of new parts but this might need to wait. There is definite signs of corrosion in the fuel filter so I might just swap the filler neck I already have.

So after a tiring week of Uni last week all I have managed to do is power wash the underside of the car the best I can and get it up to a reasonable height to work on..

Might also be worth changing the drive flange seals in the gearbox while its off the car, they are not expensive.

Would like to but it's probably beyond me. I could make a tool but it's the lack of time with everything else. I had asked what size the driveshaft size is on my car on another thread but it will be easy to determine with a quick measure.

Thankfully I am going to get some help from a friend of a friend who knows his way round most 80's cars. Tomorrow eve we plan to get the box off, examine and start from there.

I got the whole exhaust off..

With the new down pipe I'll be good to go with the rest of the system..

I knew the rear valance under the kit was like this..

but didn't realise how bad under the exhaust It's the heat from the exhaust with all the rain and salt causing this..


I actually think in the short term I can take the rear plastic valance off and make a neat cut and protect it until I can make a better repair later in the year unless it's really bad

The only reason I mentioned the seals is that I wished I replaced mine when the gearbox is out as its alot easier to replace them when its not attached to the car, you have to upset the camber, remove the driveshafts, replace the hub nuts and there is not much room to move lying on your back behind the engine.

Saying that my seals leaked for 3 years before I changed mine, just kept an eye on the oil levels in the gearbox.

Thanks for the advice I know I can buy the seals, they are 90mm shafts. The box is off the car and is so dirty it's hard to tell if I need to replace them.

What I have established is that the coolant flange leak has clearly been going on forever and pretty sure it's been contaminating the clutch. There has also been what looks like an eternal cam cover leak going by the amount of oil everywhere. I have tried changing to rubber gasket maybe just needs torquing or uneven cam cover

So far box is out (pictures of box will follow phone camera ran out of batteries)..

Linkage absolutely filthy will be removed and home-brewed short/weighted shift..

I feel embarrassed about this, been leaking for a long time..

Was fighting with manifolds for quite a while trying to figure out their removal..

There are a couple of inlet studs that are really hard to get to but with the use of a dentists mirror I got it removed so I can change the gasket/O ring..

Then the final stud of the exhaust manifold was easy, all the bolts/studs came out easy if not a pain to access..


More to follow soon, a lot of cleaning, a bit of welding and painting Oh and see the steering boot is split I've got a quick short term fix for it

If you can find out where to buy a new steering rack boot for non-extortionate money let me know! Mine is a little bit scabby with age!

I was looking at that steering boot again earlier and it's in pretty poor condition. The plan was to bond a piece of neatly cut rubber inner tube over the split area.

Is it an easy part to swap? like full rack out or just steering column?

The part I have seen twice on ebay for around £40. One had sold at that price and I think there is another escalating in price

Bought LUK clutch kit (only £50), release bearing +cap, exhaust gasket, thermostat +housing, linkage ball thing, exhaust clamps, inner cv bolts etc..

Old clutch comparsion, contamination! /fly wheel will need a clean..

Gearbox well dirty!


Frustrating trying to access the two bolts of the gear stick, console had to be loosened..
