there still is a part of me thinks that I should maybe go for something a bit later, like something with a DX engine and that doesn't need bodywork fettling. I was spoiled rotten with my last Scirocco - it was as solid as a rock underneath.

You can never really tell what's lurking under the body kit. Your car really doesn't sound that bad.

Exactly what I said yesterday! Okay, so drop the coolant and flush and refill with new G11, new rear brake shoes are £23 from GSF (Brembo) and a new brake fitting fit is £12 again from GSF, the rear suspension as we discussed is about £100. So all in all a few hundred quid and then get the rest sorted when you are back in Northern Ireland.

This place sells the rear suspension mounts, genuine VW for £6.90 each, top and bottom.
I looked under Scirocco but there is no price so went under Golf cabriolet so might be worth a phone call to find the prices of shocks etc..
Used them a few times and can recommend the company and very helpful if not sure on which parts you need.

*Note - I never pay listed price for parts, I always ask for a discount and usually get it when dealing face to face! GSF actually have a massive discount scheme for emergency services, H.M Forces and suchlike.

Picture of what you have fitted would be helpful and where the mounting points are on the car. Is the back box round or oval? A quick search on ebay
Centre section £15.45 then £11 postage instead of £51.30 then postage from vw heritage!
Even though your car is not listed in the header it is listed lower down the page.
I have used this company for my middle section on my Mk1 and its a good quailty exhaust.

That exhaust centre section looks very promising...

but will this back box do the job? it says it would fit a mk1 GTI, which is obviously not the same thing! but would it fit a mk2 1.6 GTI as well?

Mk1 back box will fit the early small fuel tank mk2 but the tailpipe will be too short to clear the extra few inches grafted on the rear of a mk2.

Bugger! nothing is ever simple. ah well, i am sure i'll work something out!

Off to the Phirm today after a three week soujourn to pick the car up. I must say it does drive, sound, and stop much better. But they're not the cheapest! Glad I got it all checked out properly though, and all the worst bits are done. Anything else I think I will attempt myself, apart from bodywork.

I sourced some parts myself to keep costs down, and hopefully this will be enough to get the car up to Liverpool next weekend and on the boat home.

Among many things done were:

new shocks


new exhaust – which did fit, actually. Not as long as what came off it, but looks a bit neater at the back, I think.


Also spotted this familiar looking beastie up on the ramps.


So, next steps... well, I have this original 40L filler neck to be fitted - thanks to Joost (Blueshark).


I also got myself some proper rear lap belts, courtesy of Marshall (shavhead)

Had a text from Rick this evening, he made the first part of his journey home, he got to Liverpool okay.
Mind I wouldn't want to be crossing any sea at the moment with this wind!

As Ian says, the drive back to Ireland was faultless. the car's bodywork is pants but its engine is anything but. Torquey and smooth up through the gears. When i got home to familiar country roads there was a big smile on my face.

anyway, a couple of tiny updates:

Fitted a new boot lock seal. the old one was like a piece of 30 year-old- licorice - or what remained of it anyway. have taken the carpet out to dry, mopped the floorpan and ordered a dehumidifer bag thingy
