Re: 1980 GLS
Lots going on, moved into a new manspace with a couple of pals, lots on Mr.F's car and other bits and bobs but managed to get a bit a bit more done on this car.
The other lower corner of the rear panel needed a bit of attention too.

Also got stuck in to a bit of painting

Elsewhere in the workshop, Guz made cracking progress on his GX project

edit: bloody photobucket playing up!

On the same site Paul, but moved the grotto a few metres to the left, to the back of the massive unit that we were in working on Sean's car when you came for your visit. Works out great for us all.

Re: 1980 GLS
The inner wings on both sides of the car needed work.
So I had a go at using the inner wing repair panels supplied for a MK1 Golf. I knew that they were not exactly the correct shape required and that they would require sectioning, but to be honest I only used a small amount of them. For the amount of bashing required to get the repair panel to sit neat against the suspension turret you may as well measure up and make your own. Which is what I ended up doing here:

Mk1 Golf inner wing section used here (it needed a bit of farting about, i prefer the homemade repair above):

Seam sealer after primer, shutz to follow. Indy cowls were repaired too.

Back to other side, from engine bay (with Golf 1 bit at front)

Bit of the crusty stuff on the front panel

Re: 1980 GLS
You'd think it wouldn't you, as they all seem to be bloody gold. But i think there were other colours, Indiana Red, River Blue and Platinum spring to mind.mr.brown wrote:Was gold the only available colour for a 1980 GLS?
Spotted this.

quick blast of the needle scalers revealed more rot at the bottom of the sill and at the rail, plus lots of filler hiding a big ole dent in the sill. It wasnt a bad repair of the dent, but i wanted to weld new metal in for the bottom of the sill and couldn't find good metal without removing a ton of filler.

so only one thing for it.

started to rebuild inner sill and rail.

and new outer on.

Re: 1980 GLS
Had a go at repairing the original drivers door.
Rusty bottom and lifting filler.

Got rid of the bottom of the skin to reveal the mess, the frame itself wasn't too bad beneath the surface rust, just needed a scrub with a wire brush, a few new sections letting in and rust killer.

Cut away a bit more of the skin and used a repair panel to renew.

Acid test. With a wee bit of fettling to the rear corner of the pattern sill the door fits -phew!
