Re: Garage find mk1 scirocco
Moving today under its own steam for the first time in about thirty years! Fired up nicely, selected all gears with no issues, pulled like a train and thankfully brakes also worked well. So back to plan A - get it mot'd - removed from sale!

Good to hear you are getting it MOTed and on the road, enjoy it for a while and if at a later date you do decide to sell it at least a new buyer will know it’s road worthy and you would of sorted those little niggles which happen when a car is back on the road after a long time in storage.

Re: Garage find mk1 scirocco
Glad to hear you decided to keep it, you won’t regret it.
My plan was to sell mine once it was running, that soon changed haha

Re: Garage find mk1 scirocco
Well, today was the day - submitted the car for it's first MOT since 1988.
Great news - passed with flying colours and no advisories.
Quite a refined ride really, engine sounding good, pulling well with good emission results.
Thanks for all the advice/tips/parts that got me through - seems worthwhile now!
Cheers
Andy.

Re: Garage find mk1 scirocco
That’s is fantastic news, well done for continuing with the recommissioning and not selling it.
Summers just around the corner and time to enjoy driving it and see what a Mk1 Scirocco is all about, it will be worth it as you won’t be able to get the grin of your face. See now many people come up to you and say “I used to have one of those” or “I always wanted one of those”
Keep the updates coming.

As it's been off the road for some time take it easy at 1st so things bed in, not sure how much use the engine has had since it's been off the road but if it was me I would would also change the oil and filter after 1000 miles or a month if you don't do alot of miles in it.
Mann or genuine VW oil filter is the best ones to get, £3.75 with discount from Euro car parts.

Re: Garage find mk1 scirocco
Defiantly do what Mark said! I need a new gearbox due to not changing the gearbox oil I think.

Re: Garage find mk1 scirocco
Might be worth changing your gearbox oil as well if it’s old or you don’t know when it was last changed.
I’ve changed both my cars over to fully synthetic gearbox oil now.

Re: Garage find mk1 scirocco
Thanks again - hadn't given much thought to gearbox oil, but have done engine oil/filter etc.
I only have the old V5 from the eighties - so have to apply to the DVLA for a new V5C @£25 then once I have that I can tax it - quite frustrating really - I should have transferred it earlier but thought I'd be ok with the old V5.

Re: Garage find mk1 scirocco
Just a quick update - V5 returned and now taxed.
Done about 50 local miles - flashing red light in temp gauge now sorted itself out!
Runs really well, the idle has also dropped to below 1000 rpm and I plan to change all fluids at 100 miles.
Performance is very good when compared to my RS2000 (gti would leave it standing).
I plan on taking it to the Awesome GTI event (Manchester) in July (if they let me in :) )
Cheers.

Just had a look at the National post - If the 'shakedown' remains positive, then YES, I will do my best to turn up - it's certainly no show n shine contender!
