Just a shot in the dark, but recently I had a similar sort of noise from that area in the engine bay - it turned out that I hadn't tightened the cambelt enough, and it was chattering against the cambelt cover. You may want to consider taking the cover off, making sure everything is clear of the area, and running the engine to see if the noise continues. With mine, a quick adjustment of the cambelt tensioner sorted it.

Thankyou so much people for all your help,its so nice to find a friendly bunch of vw owners,youre a dying breed unfortunately.
When the timing belt was done,it was just the belt that was renewed,no tensioners or anything.havent taken the cover off yet to see which wheel underneath is the problem.the cars my daily so i put it back together asap after doing the waterpump to let the leaky beetle back in the garage.
The only reason i thought it could be the bottom wheel thing behind the pulley is because that pulley seems to vibrate a lot.the outer pulley has just been changed so i know it aint that
If it was the cambelt rubbing,id have thought the noise would have changed tone at least with a new cambelt on?
The noise strangely isnt as frequent with a new waterpump on but its still as loud when it starts.its like ive managed to bump something although i dont know what.id say with the vibrating pulley its under the cover and i didnt have that off.it may end up one of lifes great mysteries till something falls off!

Having done a bit of a trawl through other websites I think my next port of call would be to change the timing belt tensioner to eliminate that before potential more serious interventions. Maybe carefully running the car briefly with the cam belt cover off.
As Old Mac Rocco says give us a shout if you are really stuck, I'm off Thurs and then only the Sun but there's always the morning
Oh and I might well be interested in the half water pump as I have other pumps I can attempt to separate knowing that that the bolts can shear but don't have to be in a rush. Hopefully you can make it Sun

Thankyou again so much for your help.
The only problem with running the car without the cover on is that it only makes the noise when the engine is hot.by the time ive ran the engine to heat it then stopped it to take the cover off,i'm worried it wont perform on command and make the noise!
The car runs fine etc and its been making the noise for a while now,its just more annoying than anything.i do get funny looks at traffic lights though when its in full rattle mode.
Next step then is to order a tensioner.fingers crossed thats the problem!
I'll bring the water pump along to knockhill with me.as i said before,its still in its box etc.i just ran out of drill bits drilling the studs out the other bit and gave up

Is the timing belt tensioner maccoll posted earlier the one i need?gsf ebay shop have 2 different ones but no description to say which is the right one usefully....

Re parts- go to a web site that lets you put your car reg in and then matches your car with the "correct" part.
Euro show two for mine, identical dimensions etc and £4.00 of a difference.
It helps to narrow it down a bit.
Other method is phone local VW dealer and ask for the part no and if he has it in stock, you don't need to buy it from there as long as you get the part no.
After re-reading your thread I noticed yours is a 1.6, the spare engine I have is a 1.8 but the pulleys etc MAY be the same.
Maybe someone can confirm this or otherwise, anyway the offer is still there.

thanks for the offer of parts sandy,i just may well take you up on it.seems dry today (for once) so may get the bug out the garage and put the scirocco in to have a poke around.then again is it worth taking it apart to have to put it back together again to take it apart again when i get the bits?could just use the beetle till they turn up but ive turned into a wimp and got too used to having heaters since i bought the scirocco.
the gsf ebay page says the tensioner will fit.i havent been to euro for 4 years after the counter assistant there asked me "what was it the man told you to ask for?" and i nearly decked him.its safer to the general public if i shop online
really hoping its just the tensioner now and not something more invasive

Took the top timing belt cover off and ran the engine.nothing at the top appears to be wobbling or catching but then it only really does it when the engines properly hot.if the tensioner had gone,would it be noticeable?the one thats on doesnt look that old,its maybe been replaced at sometime in the past.got the car with no history so dont know what was done to it over 4 years ago.worried that if i take the bottom cover off and run it,the belt will fall off somehow.thats how my luck normally works!

Just to let you know that I am doing B-I-L's discs and brakes on his golf tomorrow but I'm free on Thursday if that suits.
Maybe call in reinforcements from East Ayrshire if you are available Mr MacColl. I'll keep you posted on that one.

Just as a point of interest did you ever see the one that was in the scrappies and ended up being sold and then advertised on Gumtree about three weeks later.
He was from the same area as yourself, did meal deliveries.

Never saw a rocco in scrappies round here.was it in the for sale bit?probably good i never saw it,i have a nasty habit of buying cars i dont need.down to three now which is a managable number at least!
Got the car hot today and took the cover off.theres nothing glaringly obvious but ive ordered the new tensioner anyways.was hoping to see something hanging off and shouting "whoohoo!here i am!" But thats never the way,is it?

It seems I should be thanking you as further investigation with my noise has determined that it is my cam belt. It is actually in pretty poor condition and is heating up and then rattling off the tensioner which seems suspect also. The noise only appears once the car has fully heated (similar to yourself?) You can see there is wear on the side of the belt which has actually exposed metal! Not convinced it was put on right from the start and must be changed soon. Not actually that happy about driving up to Knockhill like this but no time

Really need to get it done.

It's fairly normal for the belt to be slightly off-centre, thus exposing a small amount of the pulleys - how far over is it?

my belt sits at the outside of the wheels too hence my worry it would somehow fly off.least something about my car is normal i guess!
and i'm glad you appear to have found your problem maccoll,maybe we can compare noises on sunday if we both get there in one piece?
ordered the new tensioner.i can replace it without taking the bottom cover etc off cant i?
i do apologise for the long thread with my questions every 10 minutes but i really dont know anything about watercooled engines,its all witchcraft...
