Re: Gold '79er
RWell thats it no going back now. Cracked on on friday, got the old engine out, and stowed it in the garage. It went well, dropped the gearbox first on a jack, not that i needed to split them i dont think but hey. Sunshine. Beer. Cars.

The tank is now off, and the fller neck will either be re coated, or re-produced in stainless. I think re-coating will be much cheaper - just not sure how to coat the inside?? Underside is nice and clean, only I noticed the rear beam looks to have been repaired at some point. Proof even the dryest of cars rot there. I wonder if its to do with the two holes that are close by, letting water in...

Also built a noice bench to sort out all the kit ready to go on this car:
FK coilovers already on - Gti ARBs - new wishbones, bushes and brake internals - Goodrich braided flexihoses - 1.6 gti metering head - Supersprint exhaust mani - 9" servo and MC - Wiring loom taken from a 16v conversion - Mk2 16v brake calipers - KR cams - Mk2 16v gearbox - new fuel lines - new brake lines - gti pump/accumulator & tank. Planning to have a very nearby Powerflow finish the exhaust off.

Other Plans - Polishing/painting various parts before they go into the bay, relocating battery, upgrading the headlights, heat wrapping the exh manifold. (I should have done all this prior to taking out the old engine - but hey I'm very impatient!)
For now - cleaning up the underside and engine bay, treating rust and undersealing.

Re: Gold '79er
More progress. After waiting for the perfect weekend to spray the engine bay, the wintery weather has gone and I seized the moment to spray the engine bay.
I reined in some 'willing' volanteers

My gf even helped with the sanding of the the bay
So it went from looking like this

So now that the engine bay is all sorted I can start peicing it all back together. The steering rack, wishbones, tie rods, brakes, and suspension are all in place
Loving this stage.

For the last few nights ive been pigging around with the brake lines. Flaring and beniding the lines, I routed them out of the way of the dizzy to avoid any clashes with the new engine.

Still trying to find out what resevoir to use. I hope to tidy the lines up a bit using these...

sc by bonus!, on Flickr
I even got round to routing some wires though for the new fuel pump! The new tank is sat waiting to go in now. Just have to get mate to weld back on the two studs that snapped taking the old one off.

Next up, fuel system.

Re: Gold '79er
a few details
The heat shield.

Untitled by bonus!, on Flickr

Untitled by bonus!, on Flickr
I used some ali sheet from b&q, some snips, and a sheet of reflective insulative material from ebay. £20 all in, but should save the entire project! Bargain. I also have some heat wrap on its way for the manifold as it should bring the tempreture down if the pipe does actually contact the shield.
I want to polish up the manifold, and the fuel lines, but dreading it!!
I'm working on the rest of the ancillaries now, just need to find a decent radiator (top fill), starter motor, and sort out the hoses for the kjet system....

Even though I carefully routed my lines, the brake pipes still foul the standard 9A cap - I will try and ABF angled one but who knows what i'll do if that doesnt work.

Re: Gold '79er
Decided to get this going now, wanna have it roadworthy before the clocks go back - so the MOT is booked for 19th Oct, allowing for one week for any failures. The thought of crawling around in the dark is good motivation to have it finished!
Not a lot left to do, the main things will be installing a dry cell battery in the boot, and adapting the wiring for the new engine, and upgrading the headlights + headlight loom.
