The strut brace that most people recommend is a K brace that fits under the car rather than the ones shown that fit at the top of the suspension.
I don't have one fitted but most people swear by them.
This one fits at the top.

Middle one of this three fits under the car.

Also have a read on here.

Hope this helps.

All 3 that you linked to should do the same job, it just looks like the one from Big Boys Toys has extra bracing to give more strength like the original VW designed K bar for 16v roccos, but also looks like it dips down so would probably be the lowest point on the car, it may or may not be an issue for you on fire roads.

The 2nd and 3rd are the same thing, but rally design have just put a generic photo up rather unhelpfully.

Grand, found some stuff on vw vortex with pictures of how the K bar ones fit too so it all makes sense now, thanks again.

Last question (on this subject anyway haha)...I can find plenty of lowering spring kits using google but it's not so forthcoming with shocks. Would rather get a full kit including springs and shocks if possible, but google only seems to come up with Gmax kits which don't get rated highly when searching for reviews.

Found this DPM performance website, which seems to be ok having googled the website.

Thinking about getting this Koni Kit as it's got good reviews from other car forums and I don't think I'd ever actually do any adjusting if I had adjustable dampers.

Any other options on there people would recommend, or which shocks to get and where to get them? Max budget for everything is probably about £400, pretty much gonna pick a set off there and go for it unless there are any big reasons not to

The Koni STR.T is what I have on my mk4 (didn't say which model earlier). Recommend it. The 'banging' through pot holes I sometimes get is down to my cheap nasty replica 18" wheels being heavy as it did that with stock suspension too. I need to swap them!

The last time I asked about OEM K bars at the dealer they could sell me one for about £140.
saves arsing about trying to make something fit as it was made for a Scirocco!
