Re: I need a detective!
id say the headlights switch too. ive had two roccos where its burnt out. Ive had two where the wires have even melted near the switch?! The lights come on with from the stalk becasue its completign the circuit. you really dont want to run it like this has the wirign was not designed to handle this kind of load. YOu can get the old switch out pretty easily, just tug it out.

Yes, the switch can short intermittently. Is pretty easy to change once the steering wheel and spacer is removed.KB88 wrote:Im really inexperienced when it comes to electrics. Im a bit lost here, when you say the ignition do you mean my ignition in the sterring column...the barrel etc? This is appears to be working...
When the switch shorts the headlights go out but everthing else works as normal.

Same problem here tonight in the GTX - will look at switch & check the earth under the bonnet tomorrow. Had burning smell but mine was from the fuse area - even got wispy vapours - like wet dust burning off - been like it for years, despite looking at the fuseboard, there was no evidence of anything amiss there. Thanks for the tips! But it's a feckin pain, driving 18 miles on side lights or main beam........

Fil looking at the car today - switch ok - the problem is there are no volts going to the switch. Forgot to say but the fogs aren't working either - presumably because the headlights aren't operational. Did try them last night, would have made driving home a little more comfortable..... hey ho! Will let you know what Fil finds....fortunately I have a spare fuseboard if mine's fooked.....

Ignition! Not getting the click of a relay when turning the key. Fil jiggled the wires in the steering column & hey presto - got the click of the relay & the lights are back! So he removed the housing underneath the steering column & sprayed some lubricant & switch cleaner (handy being an electronics engineer) onto the back of the ignition switch, without having to remove it. All working beautifully now! Hope this helps with your problem.
Thanks for the pointers to the ignition though guys - certainly saves a lot of time....

KB88, where are you based mate? There are a lot of people on this forum that are more than willing to take a look for you if you don't have the experience, may save a lot of grief for yourself and you could learn as well.

Well, I got the switch in the post from Ben spares after some fault finding over the phone, so thanks for that….haven’t opened the packed up yet but I will do.ianaudia4 wrote:KB88, where are you based mate? Errrm…I had a guy come out and test the switch plus wiring. Well on Monday there was a lot of ice and I really didn’t fancy taking the bike, so I started the Rocco up, defrosted her and set off. As I was driving up the road I had to get out to scrap the ice off as it was freezing as I was driving! As I was doing this I noticed light at the front of the car, the bloody headlights are on, albeit very dim.
I couldn’t stop to look properly so I got to work. That evening I got in the car, started her up and switched on the lights, again, they came on but very dimly lit.
I basically clicked the switch one way, then click it straight back the other…the lights came on!
I really have no idea what’s happened here, I’ve kept an eye on them but they haven’t as much as flickered since coming back on.
I guess this is what they call ‘character’??
