Thanks, appreciate your views. Just can't get into the zone with this car, not been feeling great and commuting on the train in grim weather is giving me the blues. Anyway scraped off the foam and cleaned off the worst of the dirt. That glue won't be fun to remove and the rust is actually quite bad..

I have just renewed the sound proofing on both my cars, I found the best way to get the glue off was using a paint brush and white spirit, then scrape it off with an ice scraper, should take about an hour, a tip though, use a sheet or suchlike to cover the engine!
You seem to be an expert at getting rid of rust, nice job you have done.

Thanks mate, Good shout on the white spirit figured a certain solvent would do it. I had a big sheet of plastic membrane covering the engine while the foam was scraped off.

I'm actually less intimidated by rust than doing mechanical stuff as someone who is constantly having to learn on there own. Practical Classics mag is currently doing a whole bunch of product tests on a bare metal car (a ford) that is being driven through the winter.

Quite the opposite for me, I hate bodywork issues and would much rather pay someone to do a "proper" job as I just don't have the patience!
These cars are easy to work on, both mechanical and electrical and shed loads of room in the bay to play around in.

I do hope that you will make it to Volksfling in May, it's at Biggar, a few of us make the trip from south of the border, last year we had a 6 car line up of register members and Neillyboy won best in show. It will be good to see you there mate.

Regarding the oil in your carb:
Mine sucked oil in up the breather pipe - this would then run through the air box and leave the air filter looking like it had never been changed, (I changed mine after 6 months once!) and pulled the rest into the carb. Popping an oil catch tank in line on the breather hose solves it completely.I was amazed how little oil it actually catches (and how much mess it makes!) - mine had more condensation in than oil.

Yes it's the near mile walk in each village to get the train that is especially grim. I had the carb home on the train with me worried about the fumes but the fumes from the Old firm fans were stronger!

^Thanks :good: I'm set on getting a catch tank probably something like this..
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-POLO-PASS ... 53e5f4da58
Anyway I'm gradually getting things done, new rad only 28.89 delivered in two days! from Volks bits..
Image
Rusty bits were wire brush cup on grindered down then a bit of hammerite, not my first product choice but convenient in metallic black spray form..
Image
Image
Tempted to take off inlet having read about possible coolant blockages that occur on an rusty ring where it goes into the head? probably wait till I take the head off later in the year..
Image
Discovered a poor fix with the rusty fuel lines which must be sorted, going to try and use Polo fuel lines I have (I know I see the exhaust rust too!)..
Image
Image
Finally right now with the Super bowl on I am cleaning the carb, nothing like using the kitchen for garage work..
Image
Cleaner..
Image
Just the lower half to do, run out of Carb cleaner but should manage with the paraffin stuff I have, the smell is almost as nauseating as the Black eyed peas were at half time..

Well as mentioned on another thread I've been kind of stressing about getting old red through an MOT. So I have been pro active and got the following done..

Catch tank was purchased after some good advice from Fonzooorooo..
Image
Carb looking a lot healthier with perished vac hoses replaced where necessary..
Image
Managed to make Mk2 GTI fuel pipes fit the car using some improvising with pieces of old rubber innertube, not ideal but no more dodgy corrosion..
Image
Image
Bit of filler on tailgate that was welded then etch primed and the black stuff is seam sealer on the more pitted bits and on the seam where the metal flaps round. this inner bit will be painted satin black I figure the finish doesn't have to be perfect. I'll then paint the outer in colour match and look at painting the whole tail section when the weather gets warmer..
Image
Image
Here's something that I felt went without a hitch for a change, made these rear arb clamps..

Cereal packet template..
Image
Flat parts cut flaps bent on ends, then were drilled..
Image
There you go..
Image
On car.. (New bushes and rear beam will be cleaned up and painted later on)
Image
Engine bay starting to look a lot better (excusing the ridiculously large battery which will be replaced)..
Image
Cam cover/rocker gasket was fitted, dam fuel leak hit the cover and the rad cowl stripping a bit of the paint, this will be sorted later..
Image
Finally even managed to make a bracket over the top of the coil bracket for the Catch tank..
Image

How many dam fuel clamps/jubilees do these engines need?!

Keep going matey, you're doing a great job, inspirational!! :ok: Don't know if you know but there is a tiny petrol filter in the brass tube you connect the fuel hose to on the front of the carb. Just pulls out with a small BA screw twisted in a couple of threads. Clean it out to save you chasing a fuel starvation issue later.

^Thanks for that, not checked that filter on the carb inlet yet. I take it it's just like the mesh ones you get on Webers. Not got round to it yet.

Today was a good day  got through an MOT with just one advisory on worn brake pad (this was always going to be addressed anyway)

Managed to get the tailgate done, not happy with the satin black paint and the red was just applied really until the weather is more appropriate when I'll be looking at a spraying the whole lower section. I'm happy with the general profile of the welding and filer though..

MOT'd a bit grimy but ready for the road albeit still with a huge lists of jobs.I have those oem black centre caps which I didn't have time to fit.

^Yes they seem real solid, I'm always looking for bargains on equipment and it's good to share :good:

ianaudia4 mentioned Volksfling earlier, I'm hoping once I get my membership sorted to attend. Want to keep going with improving the car and it's nice to have a target date to get it to a more presentable state. Cold start is an issue, just won't idle for a minute or two so that is the next job to figure out.

Another pretty good price from a wee independent motor factors is a GM battery for £30..

No membership is required for Volksfling mate, turn up and go on the show and shine, we won't win but it is the best parking at the show!
I hope you have a bigger than 45 amp alternatorfor that battery bud!

I'm not buying Crazy Quiffs arb clamps to win a concours event lol. Yes I'll see what plans you folks have in the events forum and maybe camp one night.

You have me worried about the battery, once again totally ignorant :dunno: Thought any 063 would do? The alternator is a reconditioned one and doesn't look stock. Can't tell what amp it is till I probably remove it. It is pictured in thread if anyone knows?
