hi,
the arrowed hose/pipe wont end in tears.some oil fumes may enter the car but not enough to kill the driver lol.

sounds like the feul system needs a overhaul !!!!

as much as you may not want to hear this, buy a webber, the repairs could cost atleast a 3rd of the carb replacement, the webber is simple and comes with all you will need to sort the feuling issues.

glad the oil light is staying off for you.

That pipe vents hot air from the engine back into the top of the rocker cover back into the airbox. Most cars of this age have similar problems with cracking rubber pipes. I would replace it immediately, but then I have driven with it off before (forgot to reconnect after removing the airbox) without incident.

The cracked pipes on the back of the carb are more of a concern. If you don't get the right pressures from one side of the carb to the other it won't work right. Its a terrible design which has thankfully gone the way of the dinosaur with the advent of fuel injection.

I have chopped the split end off (15mm or so) and clipped it back on, that will do until the new one arrives.

I have seen 5mm fuel hose, non braided and braided in GSF. Is this stuff ok for the carb hoses if I replace the ones I can get to ?

numbers are 186VG0020 and 186VG0021.

Thanks again.

It won't fix your real problem, but instead of just replacing that breather pipe (arrowed on pic), pop an oil catch tank in line (ebay is your friend!) ... All the hot oil fumes are then taken into the engine and burned, just as they should be, but it stops oil getting sucked in, keeps your filter cleaner for longer etc... I built one using a power steering reservoir off a vauxhall frontera, but for the price they are new, it's really not worth the trouble!

Oh, and +1 on getting a Weber to solve your problems. Certainly beats chucking money at your pierburg (unless it turns out to be a cheap fix of course!)

Query about fuel hose: Yes, if it's fuel hose (therefore fuel safe) it's fine. There's not any real pressure to worry about. New is better than old! (Especially ones above the exhaust!)

Thanks for the reply Fonzooorooo.
I haven't done much with the rocco lately as I have been working on my own car (16V golf) that has been feeling left out! I will see how many fuel hoses I can get to that look knackered, as the car is behaving ok other than the smell of petrol, so fingers crossed it is a cheap fix. I need to see how easy it is to replace the heater on the carb, as this seems to be what is causing the relay to click after a few minutes of warming up.

Its one step at a time as I have to diagnose problems with not much knowledge then hassle you guys!! Much appreciated. I'll be back if I need more info.

(the mrs didn't like the sound of paying out for a Webber!!)
