It was the late 80's and, aged 19, I needed a new car.
My mates all had been running the usual: mk2 escorts, XR2, XR3, XR3i, Nova SR, Astra SR, Astra GTE, MG Metro, Mini etc etc but I hated "following the norm".
I had previously had a Fiat 127 sport, Fiat Strada 105TC (which literally turned into dust!) and then a Mk2 Polo GT.
I had narrowed it down to 3 cars and sorted out a few roadtests.
1) 1985 Lancia Delta HF Turbo Martini Edition
2) 1982 Audi Coupe GT5
3) 1982 Mk2 Scirocco 1.6GL
Roadtested the Audi but, despite loving the Audi rally cars, it felt like an old mans cars and there was a slight bottom end rumble.
Roadtested the Lancia and it REALLY made me smile. But after having the corrosion free Polo, I knew more tubs of body filler were on the horizon and my skills as an auto electrician would be severely tested.
So I went with the Scirocco (picture is my avatar!). It was simply down to quality and the driving position and it made all my mates as jealous as hell
A year or so later, I met my wife in it whilst sat a traffic lights in the rocco. I thought she was admiring me
So a couple of years ago when I finally got the green light to acquire a practical classic, there was no other choice!

I got to mine via strange route, when i was a student i ran around in cheap student mobiles while me mates were off in higher performance things doing some modifying, by the time i could actually afford to run a nice sports car (MR2) i was saving for a flat, then a house, finally about 2 years ago my other half was looking to get her liscence so we starte looking out for a car, we go to a lot of car shows and one year she spotted a rocco in the for sale section and commented on how much she liked them (i'd always like the unsual look of the coupe car), and it was cheap but we left it there. about 6 months later the discussion on which car she wanted came up, the plan was to get her a rocco that after a year (ie when she could be insured on my company car, by the company) the rocco would be my project car. everyones happy :)
i'd always wanted to get me hands dirty and always wanted a more unusual car, golfs are everywhere adni'd owned an number of ford's, so we ended up with a rocco, bought on the spur of the moment, and i can tell you i'm so happy with it, also because it became mine striaght away (otherhalf decided driving want for her).
if i'd gone out for a "project" car on my own ie not had to worry about insuring an new driver i'd have gome for more power and a porsche 944, but must say the rocco's going no were, plans are afoot that will take the next few years :) i suppose it also help that i was also into the VAG scene as were most of me mate so the VW fitted perfectly :)

i got in to them by chance, my first car was a mk3 polo breadvan, then a whiesel escort
while i had the escort i was thinking about what car to get next (as the escort was a temp) and i missed my old polo,
one day i was filling up at the petrol station i saw a rocco parked up and thought thats amazing.
when i got home i spent about 2 hours on ebay and autotrader looking a for a good one near by, went to see it and half way through the test drive said ill have it
i ran it for a few months till the gearbox went. got a new one in but by then i had a golf to run around in.
since then ive had another mk3 polo but a gt one, and a mk3 golf and a audi 80, while the roccos been sitting in the garage away from nasty stuff like rain and snow and cold.
gonna start using it again soon just waiting till im 21 (1 month left

I had an Opel Manta coupe which I was doing up until I got married, had to sell it to buy a sensible car (big mistake).
After the divorce I needed a car and a Silver Mk2 (non-body kit) was going cheap in Blairgowrie, so that was it.
I was going to upgrade it but a white '91 Scala came along so it was more economical to buy that. Had that for 7 years until some idiot totalled it.
I was looking for a 2.8 Capri (heresy I hear

) as I had enjoyed driving them when I was younger but when I saw the price for a good one I decided that another Scirocco would be cheaper, so I bought another white Scala (not by design

).

I first saw a rocco when I was 14/15ish. My dad's mum no longer needed hers so she gave it to him. It was an 85 gtx in an awesome gunmetal grey. She was the only owner and it had 54k on the clocks. I used to sit in it and play music whilst pretending to drive it, ha sad i know but i love that car. A year or two after that my dad sold it to his mate who was also a huge fan. I tried to convince him to keep it a coupl of years until I had passed my test but he said no becuase the insurance woudl be ridiculous. It was a very very sad day.
I got through a good few mk2s and even a p1ece of sh1t 106xs which I eventually sold for a few hundred quid. I was planing on getting something else small-engined with a vw badge on it as I was only 19. The none day my dad said his friedn was movign away so had given him first refusal on the rocco for a mere £500! I was chuffed it was back on the drive again. When it arrived my dad gave me the key and said "here you go, I have insured you on the scirocco. Just pay me £50 a month for the car and it's yours!"
For weeks I kept thinking "i really shouldnt be driving this" This was the car I ahd love during my teens. Then one sad day I was massively hungover and was going around a corner when someone shouted my name. I veered the car into the kerb on the passengers side, bent the wheel in and the car ploghted into a wall on the opposite side of the road. You should of seen how upset my dad was. I feel a bit teary typing this ha lol.
...and 7 or 8 gts'x later ive now got my fav of all the roccos. An original 16v gtx rhd conversion! It's taken 6 months to get it to where it is ant the moment but it puts a huge smile on my face!
My favoutie thing about all the roccos ive owned is that they all have that same smell. It's kind of musty. Love it!

I got into them when my Vauxhall Chevette needed a list of things as long as your house doing to it to get it through the MOT (it had "speed holes" in the front wings).
And yes I’m 22 and my first car was a 1979 Vauxhall Chevette.
My dad suggested I got a Scirocco as I wanted an older car that was a bit obscure. As soon as I saw one I knew I had to get one. I got a Green J reg GTII off auto trader when I was 18 which I sold last year when I got my current GTII which I am now converting to a 16v with megasquirt, both can be seen in my signature.

Cookie thats an awesome story - sooo good you got the car back and got to drive it, but such a shame how it ended. At least your staying true to Roccos tho, and not just any but a 16v - cool!!!
Cookie, thats awesome!!! A MUCH better bet than a Chevette!!! lol

i bought the first one ide ever seen. when i used to walk to school i used to walk passed a house an old guy lived in. he had a gold mk1 on the drive and my green mk2 in the garage. he would use the mk1 as his daily driver and the mk2 was his baby kept dry in the garage. the only time i saw the mk2 was when he brought it out to wash and polish it. once after a few years of seeing him do that i asked him " would you ever sell that car?" and he replied "you would never want to give me what i want for this car." obviously it was his pride and joy. three years after i left school i used to walk to this missis house right passed the old guys house, and the mk was on the drive. later on in the evenin the car was still there. as i was travelling on a day to day basis to the missis house the rocko just sat there and after a couple of weeks the mk1 dissapeared. i thought this is odd maybe something happened to the mk1 so now hes driving the mk2. 6 months went passed and the rocko hadnt moved an inch. one of the tyres had gone flat and mould was growing on it. then i thought i gotta find out whats goin on. i knocked on the door and some other bloke awnsered the door and when i asked him "wheres the old guy?" he said he had died 7 months ago and he was the new owner of the house. so straight away i asked him about the car. apparently he was sold the car with the house and he didnt want it in the garage so left it out on the drive, so i aked him if he wanted to sell it and he said yeah. so i gave the tyres a kick and got him down to £200. i drove it home on the night with just the handbrake working as all the brakes were seized off. its got full service history up to the point the old guy died and even came with a diary he kept of all the little bits he had bought for it over the years. absolute bargain and with 52000miles on the clock genuine with all the old mots and service paper milleage recorded. ive had it for three years now. at the time i was rolling in a mk2 golf and loved the car but it had 296000miles on the clock and i fell in love with the rocko. everything about it felt so much better including the noise( partly due to small hole in downpipe
