Ive just bought Castrol Magnatec (Halfords doing it at £22 just now for 4 litres) and a £6 filter - under £30 on bits. I will get a sump plug and washer however.
Id just rather i was doing it than the KwikFit boys - ill take my time and take the utmost care - doesent matter to me how long it takes just so long as its done right if you know what i mean!!

I hadn't made my mind up. That's why i asked! I thought there must be some reason why people do their own oil changes that i was missing, or at least that oil was cheaper than i thought so the saving made it worthwhile. No-one seems to have suggested a good reason not to have someone else do it yet other than those which don't affect me such as having an overwhelming desire to work on cars or places that use crap oil unlike the one i'm planning to use. That's why i ended up deciding to go to ats. Is that ok? I'm still open to changing my mind if someone comes up with a good reason why i'd be better doing it myself.
By the time you've gone to a garage and got someone else to do it, you could have done it yourself and had a nice cuppa. 5L of decent oil is around £17 inc VAT from somewhere like GSF. Personally I change the oil only as part of a full service - usually annually as I don't cover that many miles in the Scirocco - and that starts to make it expensive for someone else to do a job that I actually enjoy doing myself. If you don't want to do it yourself, then there's absolutely no reason not to pay someone else to do it for you; the same can be said of gardening, cleaning, DIY...

I personally wouldn't use an oil fiter from anywhere but the VW dealer, £2.80 inc VAT, these has a special valve in them as it has been mentioned on countless threads. I also bought 5 litres of VW Synta for £17, a new copper washer adds up to £20 and the enjoyment of knowing that you have used quality gear.

OEM filters also have the non-return valve (i.e. Mann); let's face it, VW don't manufacture their own filters, they specify a part from a parts manufacturer. You'll get a box that says VW, but it'll be made by someone else. However, since the dealer price is quite reasonable in this case, you might as well buy it there as elsewhere.

Yeah but places that do it for you like to use their own parts. Is it worth me buying the vw part and insisting they use that? Anyway, if this synta oil is better than gtx magnatec i'm gonna do it myself, but if not i'll go with ats and insist they use the vw filter if it's gonna be vastly superior to anything they might use.
i was under the impression that OE spec filters (and this goes for all makes, not just VW) it was a bypass valve, not a nonreturn valve. the idea being that should the filter become clogged, oil will still be able to pass thru it via the bypass valve. this stops your engine being starved of oil.
