Re: Timing belt has sliped on bottom pully on a 1.6

Setting the timing is dead easy Phil. I'll quote haynes for you mate:
Withdraw crankshaft pulley, then remove lower timing belt cover.
Temporarily refit crankshaft pulley.
On the intermediate sprocket for the timing belt there is a tooth with a centre punch mark on it. Turn the engine until this mark mates with a notch on the crankshaft v-belt pulley. (to turn engine over remove spark plugs then fit a socket or spanner onto crankshaft retaining bolt and turn)
When these marks match look at camshaft sprocket. The punched mark on it must be level with the valve cover face of the cyl. head (nearest the front of the engine). Having turned the engine until these marks agree, now look at the cams for no.1 cylinder (nearest timing belt end). They will both be in the "valves closed" position.

When you've done this bit, you just need to make sure that the tensioner is loose, then refit lower timing belt cover, fit belt and tension. Check the marks are still all where they should be before you fit everything together. The tensioner has to be turned clockwise to enable the timing cover to fit over the tensioner. This will hopefully save you the skinned knuckles and swearing that i had the other weekend!

If you need any help with this tomorrow mate then feel free to pm/email me and i'll send you my mobile number, did this recently so should be able to talk you through it even with my limited skills! :good: good luck buddy

Hi walkinginperu

and thanks every one for the advice and the haynes write up
walkinginperu i migh just give you a call if i get stuck tommorow

Hi ive got the pully off and cover and i went underneath and did what i was doing yesterday and it was jumping teeth on the crank cog so i marked its position on all cogs and losened the belt and moved it back 5 teeth then tightened it up put the v belt pully back on, removed the plugs and turned the engine but i cant get the marks to line up as they should, only when the top cam cog mark is at the back of the engine and in line with the cam cover edge is it any were near, has any one got any advice on how to set the timing correct from scratch?
cheers phil :dash:

right ive got it back to the position i was in this morning may be i was wrong with the amount of teeth, i could try moving it back another tooth or forward another tooth to see if that will bring the mark back in to line, what do you think will it do any harm?
cheers phil

Hi Phil, sounds like you're in a bit of a pickle mate. Whereabouts in the country are you?
My mobile number is 07780 945275 if you need a hand.
The instructions i gave you should allow you to set timing from scratch. I think you can check the dizzy timing by taking out a plug and then checking an internal timing mark. I'll check the haynes and let you know.
