Good call on the 50 profile - I'll be fitting those when I need tyres - it will give a little more comfort!

The wheels seem sensible sizes - I was trying to get hold of some 7's for the rear of mine....

Look forward to this one turning out!
I was addicted to American Hot Rod for a while until I watched too many on Quest. How annoying is it that everything in America is so much cheaper? Don't blame you for going ahead though at whatever cost. Think I'd do it. Good luck.

Great info, especially as I'm going to have the Mk1 dipped before I rebuild it as a classic touring car.

I'm sure you'll find plenty of suitable barns in Lincs to turn into a workshop. You just need to find a farmer who wants a few extra quid, but isn't too greedy, or too mad

My ability at updating this thread unfortunately represents my ability at getting on with working on the car, but some progress has been made over the last year.

All the bodywork has been repaired, this was completed last summer. Below are a selection of photos of the work:

Once all the metal was made good the shell was sent back for its second dip, removing all surface rust and grease:

Once back to bare metal it is then dipped with the e-coat, priming the entire shell include inside all the box sections. The car was back at the bodyshop late November:

After that it was just a matter of finishing and painting. Not the best photos, but all I've got at the moment. I got the car back into the workshop last month.

Many thanks to Rubin at Technique Spray in Northallerton (07850 856524). He's worked wonders on the car, and it looks great. Not sure if he'll ever take another project off me though!!! I definitely recommend him to any members in North Yorkshire who are looking for somebody with a passion for getting old VWs back to their prime.

Now I'm at the stage where I have a shell that is like it was when it came off the production line back in 1980, including being back into it's Schwartz colour. Now the 'simple' matter of bolting all the bits back in.

Amazing, just what I want to do. How much has the whole process set you back?

Also, are you still In the RAF?

Where did you get it dipped, was it Surface Processing?

This looks amazing :good:

I'm interested also who did the work as I'm sure I had read that dipping these type of shells can be problematic because of seam sealer and contamination of stripping agents getting in to box sections? I suppose the process you describe coats all the inner sections so clearly it's a sound process :yup:

Everyone I spoke to when I was thinking of going down this route with Project Poppy said that the process wouldn't remove the old underseal etc, but from what Durbs says this place managed to do it.

:good:

Sorry missed that it was mentioned. I know of that place in the car magazines.

I suspect my Mk2 would come out invisible if it went through this process :hehe:
