That's what I'm afraid of...

When you say C&R, are you talking about the pimping... sorry tuning and modding outfit in Nottingham? How much did they charge?

They have done some good work on my car, including the bulkhead.

Can't really give you a direct quote as it depends on how long it takes to do and they had to deal with a botched job on mine from a previous welder.

We're talking a few hundred.

TBH though, unless it's a homer, any welder will charge a fair bit, it's not a 5 minute job (and it is very uncomfortable).

Exactly the same as the GSF one. It will need trimming round the hole that the speedo cable goes through, otherwise you will have to drive using the Rev Counter as your guide to speed !

If you dont want to weld it then you could do what i did and someone else on here after.
Get a repair plate made up but make it L shaped so that it has a flat edge that you can bolt to the underside of the scuttle tray. Works nice and easy as a good semi permanent fix until you can be arsed to take manifold off to weld it up.

I like your thinking... as an alternative, could maybe make up two plates to sit each side of the bulkhead (like a sandwich), and bolt them together through the bulkhead...

I was advised to use Tiger Seal to hold it in place, but when i went to do it i couldn't get the bugger off as it had wedged itself in? :ire:

That was part of the original plan, we were going to use the L shape and a second plate sandwiching on the inside of the bulkhead. But after bolting the L shaped piece on we concluded it was good enough like that and couldnt be bothered to mess around getting in behind the pedals with drills etc.

Well, obviously the best laid plans of mice and men.... sod's law... etc etc...

Got the large repair plate from GSF (part no 71717) and of course it doesn't fit 'out of the box'... probably because it's supposedely for Mk 1 Jetta.

The cutout for the cable is perfect, and the overall dimensions are pretty good - cutting out a semi-circle to fit around the speedo cable grommet wasn't too bad either... but the bottom line is that the profile doesn't fit a Mk 2 Scirocco bulkhead ie it won't sit flat against the bulkhead.

The area in question is largely flat, but the part has been pressed such that the bottom lefthand corner stands proud (when viewed from the front of the car looking back into the engine bay). Having spend some time flattening the damned thing out, I then discover that the area to right of the aperture through which the cable passes is not flat - it's slightly recessed relative the the metalwork to the right, necessitating some trimming of the piece on the righthand side...

Does anyone know if a repair plate is available off the shelf for the Mk 2 Scirocco? If there isn't, I really think it would we be worthwhile someone on this list coming up with a template and some instructions on how to make one up from a flat sheet - if no-one else bites, I'd be willing give it a go (I'm on the verge of throwing out the GSF part anyway...) but I'm very short of time so it wouldn't be coming any time soon...

There is but it's much smaller than the Golf version.

My first Scirocco that had that fitted but it just pulled straight through a now bigger hole. :(

Mines just pulled through, but i've had the car for 5 years and don't know how long it was on there before?

i def suggest getting the bigger one as it's cost me £200 to repair the bigger hole.

hi this has just happened to my gt2 and its left me in a right pickle especially with 6 months mot on it. me and a few mates tried to fill the hole with windscreen glue just thinking it would hold the cable in the right place but its never gonna be on the road again as it looks like the bulk head has actually started to crack and it seems to have lost its strength - pretty crap considering that the steering clumn is bolted to it so the car is dead. been advised also that this is an mot faileur as its the bulkhead.
im now having to break the car for bits as i have no way of repairing it unless anyone wants it for 200 quid or so.

It's really not that hard to repair if you can weld or have a friend that can. Whip the inlet manifold off and you have plenty of access.

Well I finally got the repair plate fitted and the clutch cable re-attached and all seemed well - until I depressed the pedal and felt virtually no resistance!

I seems the cable is operating the release lever fine - but the lever isn't releasing the clutch.

Anyone got any ideas as to what might be wrong? There is definite spring tension when operating the lever but not the amount I would expect from the diaphragm spring in the clutch, more like that expected from the lever return spring.

Assuming the clutch has failed and needs replacing, how much should I pay a) for the clutch itself and more importantly b) for having it fitted? It's the 5 speed box with the long 5th ratio (4 + E), so presumably the 210mm unit.

GSF quote £49.45 for an unspecified brand (part # R-621028316), ECP £74.01 for Sachs (641440210), £69.08 for an unspecified brand (641440130),£51.64 for Transmech (641440211) and £82.65 for Valeo (641440270).

I have no idea what would be a fair (or preferably cheap!) labour charge.

Could it be something other than the clutch that's failed eg the pushrod or some other component in the release mechanism?
