Throw it away and fit a 16v on a proper manual gearbox..That'll solve half your problem 
Read Stu's post and got thinking...
You holding it on the foot brake when it dies? Have a quick look at the vaccuum pipes. Particularly the big one linking the manifold to the servo. The effect of braking may be causing air to suck in there. There's a 1 way valve in the pipe, but a short length of regular vaccuum hose on the manifold side. The clips had cut through mine (it'd got the nasty bent wire type on) - used to die braking for roundabouts.
