Great videos thank you. The plunger does not move that far out at all and when I pull on it and rotate it, it will not budge. Will try freeing it up if I can get to the shop for some brake cleaner. This will be a bit expensive if it turns out to be the distribution head..

If I need a new fuel distribution head, which one do I need and where is the best place to buy one? I did notice that the one in the Haynes manual had 3 screws holding it in but ours had 2 screws. I don't know if that makes a difference? Thanks for the help guys. I'm sure we'll iron out all these issues then the boy can enjoy the car.

You can get rebuild kits for the metering head, I’ve not done it myself so not sure how involved it is but looking online it looks straight forward?

You will need to check the part number on yours as there seems to be different kits available

Or there is a a company out there which will rebuild them for around £300 !

Have a search online as a few videos and threads on them, maybe best to search Mk1 Golf as more cars out there.

It's a funny old world when a chap you've worked with has stripped down and rebuilt the exact same head. He's going to have a look for me later this week hopefully. I'm hoping it's just going to be a rebuild.

Reading online I think you can unscrew the plunger without the need to re build the whole thing?
Not 100% sure as not done it myself, as you may know there’s a lot of rubbish online…

Fingers crossed if the chap you know can do it for you.
Have you replaced the fuel filter since having the car?

No we've not replaced the filter. However the fuel either side of the filter is good. Lots of pressure when you crack the nut either side.
The chap at work is going to come over and have a look this weekend hopefully. When he rebuilt his metering head it was full of gunk. He said it runs like a dream now.
I tried unscrewing that plunger to see if I could get anymore movement from it but it wouldn't move any further.

Watching this video that plunger does drop out after the nut is undone followed by a spring. I might take that plunger out and see if I can free it up any better.

I would replace the fuel filter as any rust or dirt in the fuel tank can easily kill the injection system and block the injectors and now they are expensive to replace.
I guess you have the bigger type fuel filter next to the air filter/metering head?

Forgot to post the link…

Fit new cooper washers 14mm at the inlet (same size as sump plug washer) and 12mm at the outlet. The picture shows washers but I’ve never had any when buying a filter…
The fuel filter is best changed every 2 years or 20,000 miles, and buy a good quality filter like the MANN one listed above.

Thanks for the link. I think it’s a Bosch filter fitted.
You can just about make it out next to the metering head.

Yes that’s the bigger type and looks very old.
Best to fit a new one once the metering head is done.
