All sorted gents
Mark1gls - you're quite right sir, I just can't tell right from left!

I was looking at it upside down!

New gasket in place, held in with some ATF dribble!

New Topran filter and pan fixing screws. Just as well, knackered the one I was trying to undo by tightening up!

Lid back on, new bolts and washers & gasket... just because I like shiny bits!

2 ½ Ltrs of that Dexron III goes in via the dipstick pipe.

The sump pan skid plate gets a lick of primer and black because, after nearly 40 years, why not? Incidentally, this also houses a simple throttle return spring when in place.

While the paint was drying, my clean(ish) OCD kicked in again... was idly thinking of firing up the Mrs's steam cleaner to see what it could do. However, a frying pan over the head would probably curtail any further use!

That's that job done, just need to double check the level when warm and top up carefully to the max mark.
Incidentally, I did try gently jacking the engine to see if I could get any more room for the wishbone bolt. Got about 5mm, no where near enough still. Hey ho.

Glad it’s done, it should make a difference to the gear change and feel of the gearbox.
I’ve done the same thing when undoing bolts especially when working at the back of the engine and standing at the front of the engine..

Thanks gents. Took it for a quick blast to put some fresh E5 Super in her before the re-test and yes indeed. What a difference to the gear change. Notable in the change down.
Before the ATF change, the auto box just seemed to stay in 3rd gear (top!) and stay there with no noticeable change down. Now as I slow down it drops down to 2 then 1 as I slow down. Fantastic!
Who knew wanting a wishbone changed could lead to better gear shifting! I'm made up!.
Currently waiting for the car to return from Crowsons VW in Spalding. I tasked them with the MOT of course, and that pesky wishbone changeout. I also instructed them to do the engine mounts if they had to unbolt them...
Fingers crossed I'll still be solvent when they call me. It's day three now.
