According to all the proper tests I've seen done on this subject (3 in total), super works out cheaper, i.e. you get more miles for your money. It's also better for your car and improves performance so I don't see why ANYONE buys normal unleaded, because apparently the same applies to all cars, not just sporty ones. The extra economy outweighs the extra cost.
All 3 tests came up with the same result. One was a Quentin Willson TV programme a few years ago where they were testing various fuel saving methods, another was a magazine article in some car mag in the dentist's waiting room! Can't remember where I saw the third one, but I've heard it said by the likes of Clarkson et al in the past too.
Anyway, it says on my petrol flap "98 roz/ron minimum" so I always use super. Apparently they would alter the vehicle on request at VW if you wanted to use lower octane fuel.
The only places I know of that do super that's 98 plus are Shell and BP - 98 and Tesco (not the Esso ones) - 99
Esso, Sainsbury's, Morrison's etc are all 97 super

I checked on the inside of the fuel flap of my '87 1.6GT, and it says a minimum of 91RON.

Higher octane fuels are just more resistant to detonation so wont give you anymore power, but do allow you to run more ignition advance.
So in a modern car that has knock sensors you will get more power because it will advance the ignition automatically, but on the older stuff you wont get a benefit unless you advance the igntion timing to suit.

But the timing in a 1.8 Sciroc is set to suit, so super it the fuel of choice surely. And the economy benefits are worth it anyway.

If the car is set up for super unleaded then running super unleaded then that is the baseline....if you run lower octane then you are risking detonation and engine damage.

Not to try to change the subject too much but what do people think of totals 97 premium unleaded - its the same price as standard unleaded. I tried it after my service and it seemed brilliant but havnt again yet..
