P,

That sounds like a good solution, how did it connect in between? Did you need convertors?

Also interested in how you mounted the various parts.

Cheers!

Wire questions, coming out of the cars original stereo wiring are four cables that connect to the black power block.

The cables are coloured, red, brown, yellow/white & blue/white.

Can anyone advise what these are in relation to live, earth etc?

I'm assuming the brown block is all speaker cables.

Red = live 12v (possible switched live)
Brown = earth for power
Yellow/white = permanent 12v live
Blue/white = power/switch for electric aerial.

The other block is for the speakers.

Thanks Mark1gls

So now it's just a case of identifying the pins on the radio and matching them up!

So... I got it to power up, but it displayed ‘phone SAFE’.

I was expecting the SAFE and I have the code but it wouldn’t let me enter anything.

After a bit of digging I found some refs to the ‘phone’ mode being down to an additional pin being connected. Have yet to check again.

To add to the joy, the battery completely drained so I’ve obviously got something wrong.

Question. As I will never need the stereo on unless i’m driving, is the permenant live still essential?

In other notes, this week the following has happened. Choke broke of from behind dash, had to remove vent and squeeze finger behind it to close it.

Brake lights now stick on, have to tap pedal a few times to switch them off.

Lower ignition cowling fell off, had been taped on by previous owner.

Rear wiper has gone, hoping it’s just the relay.

The stereo will need the permanent live for the memory, so you don't have to enter the code every time and storing radio stations and general settings.

Brake lights could have flattened the battery, check the switch, may need replacing, unless there's an issue with it contacting the pedal.

The rear wiper issue 'could' be related to the cowling, mine sometimes doesn't make proper contact at the switch. With the upper cowl off you can see the contacts of the switch close to the stalk itself.

Cheers Blakey,

The brake lights were’nt on, I tap it every time I park up to make sure they aren’t left on. Does need the switch replaced.

Interesting about the cowling, would never have imagined that would be related.

Bizarre development.

I have been advised that I need to join up the blue and yellow cables to run this stereo. I tried that and while it didn’t spring into life an unintented error did result in activity, when I connected pin 2 to the blue/yellow (joined) cables. Pin 2 is listed on this guide (https://www.scribd.com/doc/120489923/VW ... al-ENG-GER#) as ‘external mute’ an this is what puts it into ‘phone’ mode. The unit won’t power up without this pin being powered.

I have tried removing the pin once the unit is on and it stays on and works, problem is, when I switch it off it won’t come back on (unless I reconnect pin 2).

Marbles...lost.

How's it currently wired up? You may need to repin the plug for it to work.

Logic would suggest it should be as below:
Pin 8 - Ground - Brown
Pins 5 & 7 Permanent 12v - Yellow & White (possibly a loop wire needed)
Pin 4 - Ignition switched feed - Red

It works atm but once I switch it off it’s back to square one.

I ’m Fairly confident the standard wiring is in the right place.

Definitely down to security or memory, something daft that it needs to sync/start.

I have to connect the ‘phone’ or ‘external mute’ pin for a moment then disconnect it to enter the security code. Bingo, we have sound, but when I switch it off it won’t switch on again.

Seems the switched live is dead.

If I connect all the pins that require power to the permanent it works fine.

Question, there are three wires that require a live connection, as long as I switch the stereo off, will this be okay to run with?

Yes

As long as it is on a fused circuit, which the original stereo wiring is, you're ok. Just make sure any loop wires are correctly terminated/insulated and secure.

Picked up a set of Alpine-4625s 2 way speakers, one fitted straight in the other bulges a little.

Have found a bluetooth adapter for the Gamma stereo, expecting it next week.

Thanks for all the guidance folks, when I get bluetooth sorted I'll post a simple recap with photos in case anyone else needs the info.
