Thanks, will check later. I've seen a small rust spot coming through inside the boot, the other side of the fuel filler neck, which is quite possibly cause by this.

It's not the filler pipe it's the bracket at the top of the wheel arch that the filler pipe is bolted onto, it acts as a collector of crud.

If there is any failure of the weatherproofing around the bracket you will end up with a rusty hole.

im still gonna go with my post previously mentioned - the carb flange. driving normal = fine, put your foot down = judder, the throttle cable kinda pulls the carb forwards slightly, just enough to overtime cause a faint hairline crack at the back of the flange to allow too much air in and cause this issue. is the throttle cable nice and smooth/easy to accelerate/ push pedal down ? or stiff ?

Hi Scrappy,

I took it into the garage to check the fuel lines/filter/tank etc, and it's come back with a clean bill of health. So, everything up to the carb has been checked and is fine.

So, I'd like to investigate your angle next. It's worth noting that a few weeks back, before the issue on the incline, the car briefly began to rev at approx double it's typical level on a short journey home. It's not done this since, but perhaps the two incidents are related? It reminded me when you mentioned 'overtiming' in your comment.

Would this be a specialist job? My mechanic didn't seem keen to delve into the carb with everything appearing to be running fine. I appreciate and respect his point of view of course, but I'd ideally like to nip this issue in the bud, rather than fear accelerating up a hill!

Does this still happen with a full tank?

You can test the carb flange issue will moving the carb left to right and forwards and backwards with the car running. listen to see if the engine stumbles, this would indicate a vacuum leak, most likely the carb flange. But don't rule out the vacuum lines near by.

Sticking float in the carb on the pin or needle and seat are still a possibility due to it only happening on an incline.

I've had this exact issue with motorbikes.

ok, couple of easy steps. diy level 1 being easy 5 being hard, this is a 2-3. pretty simple. suprise your mechanic doesnt want to take the job on actually.

notice at the very front of the carb, you will see the flange bolt. ? well, you should see just under the earth strap blue cover a nut ?,,, remove all those around the carb, from there you should see the nuts holding the flange onto the inlet mani. remove those and give the flange a tap to remove, ( may struggle alittle )
