There's is one between the fuel tank and fuel pump and sits just above the rear axle, sometimes called an expansion tank, but it also contains a filter. It's also part of the return system and prevents fuel starvation at the pump under certain conditions.

Checked filler neck.very rusty, have found one on eBay. Could someoneplease give a brief run down of how to do swap over?

ok Problem solved, it was the dreaded filler neck. Rusted through. have now replaced filler neck and cleaned out a completely shocking amount of rust debris from the tank. One piece the size of a 10p coin. Will try to upload photo.
Sailed through MOT last week with no faults or advisories, emissions test was perfect.
