That was how I found it when I took the rocker cover off a Mk2 Golf which I had just bought, never seem one that bad. The 2 pictures are before I did anything as I forgot to take a picture of it when I finished.

New rubber gasket fitted a month ago, seems oil tight now. I have a K&N filter so the breather pipe is deleted and replaced by a breather filter. It does seem to spray an oil mist around that area so I'll fit a catch tank. The mesh inside the cover is pretty clean after I left it to soak with gunk followed by loads of WD40
