You can get it off without removing the wheel, it's just a but fiddly to manuver it out.

Iirc there's a couple of bolts either end, and a couple more hiding behind the radio.

Where abouts in the country are you?

The reason I asked about a sunroof is that the factory fitted items have drain pipes that run down inside the front (and rear) pillars. These drain pipes can split but there is a solution.

Why do you think that your car will fail its MOT?

I may be down the south coast visiting a friend in a few weeks time, I have no issues giving you a hand wiith the dash and finding your leak, it may be a week day though?

Wow, that's so nice of you! Thank you. I'm self employed so weekdays and weekends are all the same to me. I'll see if I can fix it in the meantime but keep me posted if you do come down this way. I'm in Brighton, but moving to central Hove in 3 weeks.

I'm going to fail the MOT on my foglights (and probably numerous other stuff). Every year they stop working, then I fit a new fusebox and they work again. Except this year the new fusebox didn't solve the problem. The front and back lights, and the switch light on the dash, are all not working. When I swapped the fusebox I noticed that one of the sockets is burnt out (red plug, pin 20) which I think is related to the foglights, so I think there's a problem with the circuit. I've found a mechanic now who's an electrical specialist and he's going to get them working again later this week, even if it means bypassing the fusebox. I've got several electrical faults for him to work through - probably all caused by water getting on the wires and fusebox.

Easy solution for the front fogs is remove them until you have sorted out the electrical faults. The car can't fail on them if they aren't there!

Unfortunately it's front and back and the switch. Mysteriously they worked for five minutes this morning, but now they've gone again. I'm sure I'll fail on a few other things too.
I got some badge clips - 71p each from the vw dealer!

I know this problem. I'm now on my third fusebox because of exactly this problem.

I solved it as follows:

1) Using clear bathroom sealant seal between the bodywork and rubber windscreen seal - all the way round
2) Do exactly the same between the glass and windscreen seal
3) Check the bulkhead for any missing rubber gromits
4) Using a very thin plastic sheet i folded it up and with the fuse box and dash in place but not the shelf, pushed in above the fusebox until you meet the bulkhead. Do the same at the side of the A pillar and if you can try and get it down the back of the carpet. It should stay in place. I've had it out a few times now but to be fair the sealing of the windscreen has meant no further water ingress

As an aside i sealed the rear hatch glass and rear 3/4 quarters in the same way witht he bathroom sealant

i would advise against the use of bathroom sealant on cars. it is acidic and will promote rust. butyl sealant is what should be used for sealing screens, appl exactly as described above

That goes to show not to dismiss trying the dealers first!

How did you get on with the MOT?

I may be down in Lancing W/E 9-11 May, so if you are around I am willing to lend a hand and help you solve your issues.

Should also point out that front fog lights aren't testable, so no need to remove for the test if they don't work

Sorry to hijack but, Ian, what's your split drainpipe solution?

I'd guess a length of drainpipe cut in half (or just some gutter) for the fusebox to wear as a hat

To feed a smaller diameter pipe inside the existing pipe.
