It's a rare problem, but it is just about worth checking that the dizzy is actually turning with the engine. If you don't have an assistant to help, just put the car in 4th or 5th gear and push it back and forth.

I'm trying to remember if this could be down to the ignition switch, or whether a failure on that side would also stop the engine from cranking.

If you switch the ignition to the 'on' position, but not cranking the car, can you check if you've actually got voltage to the dizzy plug. I can't remember if it's 5 or 12 volts, but definitely one or the other.
