Well, its mot time on tuesday and spent the morning going over the car looking for anything that it might fail on. Noticed the petrol tank looked a bit wet near the filler neck pipe, had a closer look and the tank has rotted through just above the connecting pipe sticks out for the filler neck :-o All the seams are well rotten and blowing out too so it was bound to happen soon.
It is only seeping through causing a very slow drip but I'm sure it wont get an mot.

Managed to get to Vwheritage in under 30 minutes and got a new tank straight off the shelf, along with rear beam bushes (which needed doing anyway). Its not a job I would attempt myself so its off to the garage.

Anyone know roughly how long it might take to drop the beam and change the tank?

I'm pretty sure I paid less than £200 when my local garage did this for me a couple of years ago. Probably 2-3 hours labour. You'd be advised to chuck any remaining petrol as it will almost certainly contain bits of rust, so there'll be the cost of a few litres of unleaded as well.

Thats about how much i expected it to be. I just hope everything comes undone easily, looking at the rear beam brackets the nuts holding them to the body are really rusted badly :-(

These things always happen at the wrong time!

Everything went well and now have an mot:-)
The polybushes on the rear beam make a real difference on the road, much more stable round fast corners

I spent some time over the past few days respraying and fitting the Zandvoort wheels

Do you not fancy a drive up to Stonor Park tomorrow?

I'd like to have gone to Stonor park but already got something on tomorrow :-(

The wheels looked a lot lighter shade of silver before I put the lacquer on then they went quite dark. Theyre ok for now and a massive improvement on the mullered p slots that were on the car but I might spray them again a bit lighter one day. I considered doing them white but thought it might be a bit to chavtastic for an old gtx!

The wheels look good as they are mate. I think white would look shite and very 'Maxpower', something a 19 year old would do to a Corsa or Saxo!!!
Shame you can't make Stonor, what about GTi International, it would be good to see a few new cars?

Good to see an old GTX in a classic 86-87 colour being brought back to life.
