Mine was skimmed a few years ago when the oil cooler failed (oIl in header tank & level rising - no mayonnaise in the rocker cover). Apparently a common problem with the water cooled oil coolers; they fall apart inside and destroy your cooling system. (Oil and water mix rots the hoses - and one of them is very expensive - one of the oil cooler connections, I was quoted £40!!).
Mine cost a bomb to put it right - new hoses, water pump, oil cooler, head skimming due to distortion with the overheating caused by this etc. - (Blew the top hose wide open, it became so perished).
The thing with this is, that the temp sensor in the rad and the sensor in the header tank give you rubbish readings when this happens (because they are covered with a slight oil film and give you inaccurate readings), so you don't really know what's going on.
I know that this isn't really about cam belt changes but thought it would be useful.

I change my cam belt about every 30k just to be on the safe side.
It doesn't cost around £100 here, but if you do it yourself - not difficult, you can do it for around £20.
Hope this helps.

Cheers

John

I changed the oil cooler, just to be on the safe side, you're right one of the hoses was £43 and only available from VW, mind you the other one was only £7.
I'm a big believer of prevention rather than cure, and cheaper :!: :!: :!:
