fuel filler neck

Hi there, I know the problem with the filler neck, I have the same issue in trying to locate one for my MK2 Scala.
I have been advised that the BMW series 1 & 2 will fit but not sure how accurate this is.
If it is any good they are made of plastic so will last a lot longer.
Has anyone had any experience of these

how advanced is the rust? has it actually rotted through, or is it just surface?

I just replaced mine on my 86 GTX. got the part from VW heritage (classic parts link or just phone them).

Filler neck: C533-201-129/D (£104)

You'll probably need one of these too...

From following some (now broken) links from other forums, there used to be a post on the Rocco Reg by 'mark' about the BMW 3 Series plastic fuel filler neck. Which one to get and how to fit it to a MK2 rocco etc. This post/thread has disappeared however, perhaps during a forum upgrade or somesuch IT malarky.

If anyone has the relevant info on the BMW plastic alternative, archived or is prepared to do a (re)write up for the delight and edification of all of us with dodgy fuel filler necks, then I think that gratitude levels might be quite high. Starting with me. ( ..really ought to be a wicki item. IMHO)

Any takers ?

Hi,
I have a mk2 pre body kit looking at service history it had filler neck and tank replaced in 2002 at 85000 miles,could anyone tell me (to give me piece of mind) wether the replacement tanks were modified in anyway ie rustproofed to last longer to give me an idea of wether I need to keep an eye on another corroded tank problem,as the car is 17 years on now ,although only done 106000 miles now,

I think that depends on the quality of the parts fitted and how the car has been used, eg exposure to all weathers, gritted roads, etc. I doubt the replacements will be any better than the original, and quite possibly inferior. That said, it would be pretty bad luck to have recurred after only 20,000 miles.

The filler neck and the bottom half of the tank can be easily inspected from underneath. Maybe take off the rear offside wheel and have a look at and feel round the filler neck for a start. You can get quite a good look at the tank if you jack up the back of the car, but don't venture underneath unless you're confident the car s safely supported (never rely on the jack).

The condition of tank, filler neck, and fuel lines should be checked during the MOT, but the car won't fail unless there is a leak or visible hole.

If they have been painted in some sort of protection then don’t worry or if the filler neck stainless steel.
If they are just fresh out of the box clean then it’s worth painting them in some sort of protection.

All depends on how you use the car, dry sunny days only etc...

If you can post up a picture and we can see what’s fitted to your car.
