Another thought on this.... check if the air filter is wet with fuel. Sometimes the metering head can spring a leak and start to drip into the air box. Not all that common, but quick and easy to check.

Wow, lots of info .

I am sure that the valve timing is spot on and i have now taken the injectors out. I understand what you mean about "open circuit" i was just saying that initially the fuel pump was just buzzing even without turning over. I aim to check the injectors tomorrow based on the info you guys have given. I have a friend who is an ex lucas injection specialist and i know he is a whizz with diesel injectors so hope that if mine are dead he can clean using his ultrasonic cleaner. When i changed the oil and filter there was loads of fuel in the oil, i presume that this is probably an indication of knackered injectors. It would be nice to get the old girl running before i whip the head off and start on the mission to get her back on the road.

well finaly managed to check the car today. Put a switch bridge in the pump relay socket and checked the injectors. They are injecting constantly wether the metering vane is fully open or full closed. There is no air filter in the airbox but more importantly no fuel either. I have pulled out the lift pump and can see a bit of corrosion at the bottom of the tank and there appears to be a contaminant on the lift pump strainer. I think it all points to knackered injectors doesnt it?

I am off to get mine checked but it looks to me like they are leaking. Spraying well but just spraying all the time it would appear.
Is there anything else that could govern this, injectors stuck open would surely be problem?
