Admittadly I've not ever used fibreglass anywhere before, would it be easy to form? I would think it would need to be strong enough to withstand stone/road damage (have you seen winstons lack of groundclearance for example? )

I know for the Mk2 you can fit the plastic one from a BMW 3 series (around 92-93 vintage). They are readily available in the scrappies for under £20 (depending on scrappy). If you google it, some chap has posted instructions (& pictures) on how he fitted one to his Mk2. Looks a doddle. I'd go fo that, unless you were looking for originality.

Of course, the Mk1 is different with the cap being flush with the body, rather than behind the flap - sorry.

The shape etc of the pipe would still be right though, might be worth getting hold of one & seeing if the body end can be modified to fit.

I would imagine the first couple of inches of your original filler, from cap backwards, might be salvagable - could you mate that to the BMW pipe?

It is at the very end were they rust as thats where all the dirt collects.

I fitted a filler neck from a Mk1 golf, £30ish new from GSF, just a little bit of bending and hitting and it fitted, the filler cap is on a very slight differnet angle.

I painted mine with epoxy mastic, then a coat of stone chip paint, then a coat of hammerite, then waxoiled.

Just digging this up again, I recently took my filler neck along to awell established fabricators, they came to the conclusion that youre looking at say £500 in labour to reproduce.... so i guess it comes down to what people arre willing to pay for this kinda thing. I'm now taking it to be dipped and coated...

I given my filler neck to my fab guy and hes hoping to make them up for £100 + postage. I will keep you guys posted

I also have a very good stainless pipe guy near me. I would be very suprised if anybody can make the end where the petrol cap goes whithout the correct pressing dies. That was my contacts biggest stumbling block. He can make up the pipe no problem, he then has to weld on the cap end, from the steel pipe. So the pipe in not 100% stainless. The cap end bit is usually ok though.
He made one up for me for £80. Ive actually made one up at work myself, out of thick gauge mild steel, again I had to weld the good cap end onto what i'd fabricated

These arent 30 quid anymore sadly.

I spoke to an electroplating company they can acid dip and zinc plate my pipe, but it wouldnt cover the inside. £50 too.

Does anyone know of a decent coating that will not flake off into the tank?? Scotchcoat?

Why would you want a coating on the inside?

Filler pipes rust from the outside in so as long as the outside is protected you will be OK.

He has the cap ends sorted on the Mk1 Golf filler necks. i believe it took some head scratching but hes over the moon with the finished results!

I think he is going to make a batch of 10 Scirocco necks. I will ask him over the weekend
