It seems I spoke a bit too soon.

When the ca is cold it'll start on the button, every time. Once it's warm however things are different, it'll run but let it idle and tll eventually die and Is a cock to restart. There's no pressure in the metering head injector fuel lines (b oddly the fifth injector is fine).
Blocked fuel filter? Knackered metering head? Could be anything. But t's taken up too much of my time in the last fe months and I need a break. Groove is studying hard for exams and the last thing she needs is me being grumpy.
So UD is off and I have a bit of breathing space. Groan

Got it running again Monday but it's still not right. Current thinking narrows it down to the Lift Pump, Ignition Amp or Metering Head. All are pretty reasonable assumptions considering it was sat in a barn for six months. Got a metering head on it's way along with an amp and I'm going to test the lift pump this week.
If I'm honest backing out of UD has been a real relief. The last few months have been a bit odd and without boring you with the whys and wherefores I found myself caught in the middle of a horrendously shitty situation with a "friend".

With that now mostly sorted and Groove's exams out of the way we can concentrate on the important stuff: her racing and me getting the car sorted.

Really oddly at this point I'm normally thinking of breaking the car (I'll never sell it as it is, wouldn't feel right) but that's furthest from my mind. It's back in my yard so I get to see it again every day and despite it sitting on winter wheels at the rear (will try and get a pic to compare, it's mental) I still love it.

Have promised that even if I can't get it running this weekend I'm going to give it a wash and coat.

And so I find myself at a fairly ironic crossing.

I should be sat in hanger suffering a fairly major hangover admiring the best dubs in the country but instead I've spent most of the morning on my back trying to sort this starting/running problem.
To begin with it was rather funny, and expected. But changed ignition amps, metering heads and a load of other bits lat and no-ones any closer to sourcing the problem. It's gone from running but dying to just not running. Everything is as it should be but the trousers just won't start.
Is the engine buggered? Extremely doubtful given its previous owner, that's not to say I haven't royally trousers it since though.
Is the wiring jus too hybrid? Possible. But all the readings are pretty much as they should be and everything tested works as it should.

So what happens next? I genuinely don't know.

I've come to the end of my tether with it, it's a fab car but I just can't be dealing with the constant shit, I realise half of it is my fault but that doesn't make it easier.

Perhaps a change is called for.....

Sell it. Let the next owner sort it. Buy it back 5 years later. Worked for me :yup:

Seriously though, the only way to deal with a mk2 is by being thorough. Eliminate the engine as a problem by checking compression and if possible a leakdown test. If that's fine 99.99999999% your problem is in the fueling somewhere. The whole mk2 system is a nightmare - filler neck, lift pump, steel pipe, expansion tank, pump, accumulator and all the rusty bits in between - not to mention the uber-useless gravity valve. The only long term solution is to clean/replace the lot.

is there not someone that could give their analysis on the situation? you know fresh pair of eyes and all that. I take it you've been all over some other forums like CGTI? there are certain folk on there who know every eventuality of various engine/wiring conversions. The likes of Rubjonny on there.

Keep the faith :good:

Utterly mental and apparently that was HIC's "managers special".

I realise that due to the nature of what it is and what I've done to it I expect to pay more but for six hundred quid I'd expect a spot of dog washing with Megan Fox

Jim, give RH Insurance a call, I pay less than £100 for my Scala. I am surprised at HIC, it cost £109 for my Storm.

Ian, I think your cars are slightly more standard than Jim's though...

Yeah, they are.

Don't get me wrong here, I fully expect to pay more due to the nature of the beast, so to speak. But that much of a hike is just barking mad.
An awful lot of things to consider today, I'm lucky enough to have a company car so what normal people spend on their daily drivers I get to spend on a toy. But I'm beginning to wonder if I've hit the end of the track

i tried lancaster and classic line. as a second car, with 3k miles and all the mods listed (8v to 16v, injection to carbs, bigger brakes, different interior - bucket seats, anti roll bars, strut braces, alloys, bodywork etc). both were under 250 for me. thats 2 years ncb, 25 years old, and live in cornwall. was pretty damn pleased with that.

i still need to spick your brains about the rear end of the bandit too, what was to look out for and avoid whilst doing the carpeting etc.

cheers

tom

Classic line were really apologetic but couldn't quote me. Rang HIC back and think I solved the problem. They were quoting the price based on the act that I'd be paying monthly so that included interest and fees of nearly 20%! Take that out and the rise I can (grudgingly) accept.

I have to be fair to them HIC have been pretty good, one of their bods went through everything with me and that price includes a very (very) healthy agreed value.

The car goes on a jaunt down to the lovely lads at Kent VWs, been using them for 18 years and they're still as friendly as ever and they'll talk to me realistically about what my options are given the budget I have in mind. It's a healthy budget but I don't want to be throwing good money after bad. I can't see that I am, the car is pretty much new given everything that's been done but I'm a worrier so everything is a bit terrible.

Best case is that it's up and running for Spring fest. Worst case is that people can start bidding on some rather rare parts.
