1.6 Exhaust replacement.

The exhaust on my 1.6GT appears to be nearing the end of its usefull working life.
Is it a question of nipping into Quik Fit or will it be more fun than that?

Euro Car Parts appear to list a centre box & I'm not really keen to 'Barry' it with some kind of dustbin bore performance system,
but any advice would be welcomed.

I've used this company to get bits of exhaust for my mk1, cheaper than ECP.
£46.74 at ECP. Its only £15.96 + £11 delivery from e-bay!

This might fit your car, you can check the list at the bottom of the page as it says 1977 to 1984 at the top but the list says scirocco upto 1993

Not sure where you will find a rear box or down pipe, Mk1 Golf might use the same exhaust might be worth looking for that?

No, avoid Kwik-Fit type places in my opinion.

To replace the rear silencer section, the rear axle will need to be carefully lowered down off the car to allow the new system's pipe to be manouvered over the axle if your car's a post '85 model with the larger fuel tank and space saver spare wheel.

This then throws up what the state of your axle mounts are etc. These fast fit places are all about speed and there is a real risk that they won't take much care (or be inexperienced) at detaching the axle, which could leave you with real problems if they dive right in without thought, which is a real possibility. For example, a few years ago they jacked my old Polo Classic up by the sump to replace a tyre causing the radiator to crack!

Much better to purchase your own exhaust system and then get a sympathetic local garage to do the fit the system for you properly as a discrete job.

I have never lowered the rear axle on any of my cars when I have replaced the exhaust and both my 84 Storm and 89 Scala have the 55 litre tank and space saver spare.

Totally agree about not using Kwik-Fit, the job is easy enough with axle stands or ramps and a few basic tools.

Never had to lower the rear axle in four cars and 15 odd years. And that's with a real variety of exhausts (1 Kwik fit as a mate was manager, one that I think was purchased through Gfs and fitted by the same Vw garage I've used since the mid '90's and the current one which was custom made and is one piece from manifold back). Current set up also has a reconned rear axle so didn't want it buggered (no idea why, who's going to see it?) and they just padded when needed.

Rear pipe wise there's a real choice out there. Quiet and standard ones all the way through bean cans. I've got a reproduction twin box on the back of mine, looks original but a bit louder. That came with the custom set up.
