Cool - hope it goes well (I really wanted a mk1 rocco as my first car but couldn't afford the insurance!)

So, as my first post i'd like to introduce myself..

Darren, 20, from the Isle of Wight (thats the lump of chalk south of Portsmouth etc for those who aren't familiar!) and i'm seriously considering buying my first 'rocco.

After many different cars with varying levels of performance (1.2 clio - 180bhp MR2) i'm thinking this may be a good route to something a little more..pure

The car in question is a white 1989 GT 1.8 8v, 112k miles, and as far as i can tell, generally good condition. Although i'll be having a proper inspection/test drive sometime this week.

All I afraid of after scanning the forum, is ending up with an undrivable rust bucket that ends up being a pit to throw money in!! (No reference intended to the "dare" project i read through earlier!)

I understand thats the kind of thing you have to put up with owning a slightly more..mature..car, but i'd like to know the general opinion on these (are they better/worse than cars of similar age)

As for the modification side of it, its safe to say im pretty handy with a spanner and would have no problem with the mechanical side of things, just have no experience with a welder and have never owned a carbed car before.

So, persuade me..what sort of performance comparison would i be looking at? And before the flamers start, I know i could get something quicker etc for less hassle, but i really like these, so it would be simply food for thought

I was on the old site, but only just reregistered since the move over to this forum. It's looking well. I have a Red GTII which I recently converted to a weber carb. Thinking a bit about going the megasquirt route some time in the future.

Hello Darren,

Firstly, have a look around at other makes of cars from the 70's/80's and 90's :!: There isn't that many still on the roads and holding their own with the modern metalwork on the roads.
Buying an older car is always a gamble but by doing your research you can lower your risk.
Are you looking at the white GT that is on Ebay, on the Isle of Wight. I saw that, it looks okay but only 2 small pictures. You want to try and get that cheaper if you can.
Any car can cost money, but Scirocco parts are reasonably priced, compared to some and there isn't much electronic wizardry to go wrong!
One more piece of research you can do is price up everything that may need replacing using GSF, Euro Car Parts and the dealers, things like belts, gaskets etc etc. I would recommend changing the cam belt, I am a firm believer of preventing thing going wrong.

Good luck.

Yo.

Me here.

Keepin a low profile as the rocco's are on a bit of a back burner right now, but thought it was time I stuck me head through the door to see what's going on.

For those that don't know, or forget such things, here's the mistress circa 2004:

and 2008:

Now she has even less attached.

Rebuild will start in anger next year sometime.

Rocco 2 is too filthy to photograph.

The bmw is now only half-pink.

that's all for now.

Welcome along Darren, im the fella thats currently working on project DARE, and your quite right, youve gotta be careful what your buying with older cars. Luckily for me DARE isnt a money pit, as im in a pretty good posistion as an ex qualified mechanic, to do the work myself. So far including buying the car (for £75), ive only spent about £110, the work needed is more labour intensive than anything else. Obviously that cost will rise before she's complete, but it wont be alot.
Good luck with the search mate, and if youve read the DARE thread, youll know what to look for. :good:

Don't ask me....it was like that when i got here !

From Darlowolf- a cunning name for a Wolves fan ( born there ) and now living in Darlington. My 79 Storm is on the road-just got the front brakes sorted but need a couple of niggles fixing before venturing any great distance, now semi retired so expenditure on the car needs to be steady. I had a TS in the early eighties and never lost the desire-now the kids have grown up I can blow their inheritance on this worthwhile cause.
