leaking windscreen
hi guys, new member here.
I have a 1989 GT which I bought last summer.
I am having a problem with the windscreen, its leaking and the water seems to get into the fusebox...which in turn leads to a dead battery!!
I have been trying to track down a new windscreen seal but so far have not had any luck. I have been able to find ones for a golf, jetta etc but I dont think they will be any good. does anyone know if any of these will work? or where I can get a new one from?
cheers in advance!

Re: leaking windscreen
try vw classic parts - there's a few reference on here or just google them - if your local dealer can't help.
there is a second hand one here - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-SCIROCCO-M ... _897wt_953 but the guy's postal rates can be steep.
stick a request up in parts wanted once you've had a proper look at how the forum is laid out.
there's also a ton of leak related threads in this - correct - section but you'll best check out for any missing grommets in the front scuttle area, lift the pastic tray carefully, just above and in front of the glove box.

Re: leaking windscreen
thanks for your reply GTXTRA,
I have tried my local dealer but according to them the part is obsolete. I also had a look on VWHeritage and could not find one on there either. I will have a look at VW classic parts.
also my apologies for posting in the wrong section... i did not realise
i will also have a read of the leak related topics for some advice!!

Re: leaking windscreen
I'd be surprised if it was the seal itself, but if it is I have one and I'm local.
Re: leaking windscreen
hi DT1,
a mechanic friend had a look and thought it was the seal. he said that if I can get a new seal he would refit the windscreen for a small fee! I also didn't think it would be the seal but don't know where else to look!
Im going to get a hose out and see if I can see exactly where its coming through from. With all this rain its becoming a major inconvenience. I also heard that this stuff is supposed to be good for sealing up leaky windscreens...

Does anyone have any experience with this stuff?

Re: leaking windscreen
Worst case you might have to do what I did and take the carpet out. Let me know if you still want the seal.

Re: leaking windscreen
Not usually a seal in my experience.
Unfortunately Nate could be spot on, this is from a Mk2 Golf but you can see what can be lurking under a windscreen seal which can seem to occur with simple bad luck..
http://www.clubgti.com/showthread.php?1 ... 16v/page12
I would double check any other type of issues relating to to scuttle, grommets etc discussed in previous threads if you search.
Oh and if your taking the windscreen out and you know you have a spare seal then I would cut the original seal to get it out.
Welcome by the way

Re: leaking windscreen
i knew i had a pic somewhere! this is taken under the windscreen opening from inside the cabin, dashboard removed. can't remember if this was nearside or offside, but both were similar

Re: leaking windscreen
Mk2 seals can be a pain in the arse to seat right, what with having square corners. If it's not perfectly seated on the glass, it can effectively be rotated in the windscreen aperture and not seal properly. Something to double check, not least when you install the new one. Incidentally, not cheap, but a new one: http://www.vintagerubber.com/mk2windshi ... omk2-.aspx
If you do buy a used one, get it in a bucket or bath of hot soapy water and scrub it clean with an old washing up brush, getting into all the sealing ribs.

Re: leaking windscreen
hey.. as polov8 posted you can get a new seal from vintagerubber.com
I did at the start of the year cost me in postage then custom charges then fitting.. cant remember total cost...
but was worth a water tight windscreen and a dry fuse box...

Re: leaking windscreen
after some investigation it seems that it is in fact a leaking grommet under the scuttle! I think the windscreen has a very small leak so will have to be done at some point but has dropped down the priority list!
i am somewhat relieved as this is should be much easier to fix than the windscreen.
thanks for all your help, this is a very friendly forum!

Re: leaking windscreen
This is good news
I word of warning..
I have a mate with a Mk1 Golf Cabriolet who was in need of a fuse box. A draining grommet/tube on this particular car was blocked and the water was dripping over the fuse box. He had on going electrical issues and it wasn't obvious that the fuse box had got wet and corroded. So I was able to sort him out with a spare fuse box off a Scirocco and I think he's sorted.
My current Scirocco had a crack in the scuttle that has clearly letting water in to that area along with leaves and dirt. Thankfully there is no evidence of the moisture getting into the interior. Keep an eye out for debris in there and your windscreen seal.
All the best with it and appreciate your friendly forum comments.
