Mk 2 TDi - gearbox ?

Post by rustyinn »

Now that the 1.9 TDi engien has settled in nicely I'm looking to see what I can do gearbox wise, it's still running the stnadrad 1.8 GTX petrol box which i an start quite happily in 3rd or even 4th gear in now! so could do with something a bitter longer legged in the higher gears.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Cheers

Mk2 Golf TD/GTD or an early Mk3 Golf TD box would be my choice if you want to keep it rod change. :good:

OP did you do a build thread on your conversion?

I run a 1600 diesel. Slow but 73mpg proven on one occasion!

I avoided the TDi as someone told me that a Scirocco box wouldn't clear the clutch and flywheel on a TDI? You've obviously not had such a problem.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Also, a 4+E Scirocco box will see you doing 75mph at 3,000rpm.

The conversion was done for me by Volksmagic up in the Midlands along with uprated brakes and fully adjustable suspension. Very happy with it, just want longer legs on the box - did wonder about the 4+E box, had one in my very first car - Mk2 Golf GL 1.8 - and it was a great motorway cruiser.

Would prefer to stick with stnadrad shift for now if i can as funds aren't that healthy, but who knows in the future.

Not sure about any clearance problems they had, but they obviously got it to work - I'll have a chat with them next time I'm in that area.

i'd guess you'd just use the rocco original clutch and flywheel.
