Reverse gear too easy to select

I just replaced all of the bushings and a couple of rods in the gear linkage. The gear change is nice and tight, but first gear is now hard to find due to the fact that it keeps slipping into reverse (or third). The weird thing is it will go into reverse without having to push down on the stick - any ideas what I could have done to cause this? I didn't touch anything beyond the shift rod bearing - the shift rod, splined shaft and gear lever are all undisturbed.

After some digging it seems like I have the same problem as here http://sciroccoregisterforum.co.uk/carf ... age#p28802

Basically the finger needs adjusting, which is strange as I didn't touch that end of the linkage.

i had the same problem,
changed my bushes and then slipped into reverse as tho it was 1st. i adjusted it back on the linkage but now 1st is a bugger to get. im gonna make some adjustable linkages that can be moved in smaller increments.
I dont mind project cars but I HATE SANDING!!!

Yeah for me the reverse lock finger at the bottom of the gearstick had come out of allignment - the gap was too big, so the finger didn't lock against the place before finding reverse. It's just a case of twisting the long splined relay shaft until the gap between the finger and the plate is 15mm. Sorted mine out perfectly.
