89 Mk2 GT - moving forwards

Post by Jimwise68 »

Bought this little baby last year:

It had had a fair bit of work done to it, but a few known issues cropped up (rusty filler/fuel lines being the worst).

After finally getting the engine sorted and running sweet, i then moved on to the body work.
Had a fair few ideas in mind and still undecided at the moment, but on that note I thought I would change the rear clusters to tinted versions and add the BBS RMs that i had had refurbed from dodgy blue to BBS gold.
Image

That was the tail end of last year, now the spring has finally arrived, i decided to finally put the coilovers on to make the car a bit more seated rather than a 4x4 monster truck.

Next step is to get the few rust spots sorted, remove the rest of the decals and get a nice new interior sorted. Hopefully before all the shows start.

Coming on well ... the BBS wheels and the lowered stance make a huge difference. :vcool: How much have you dropped her and what tyre size have you opted for?

As for the dcals, would have been tempted maybe myself to leave them in place. I think they look neat in the photos, but maybe not in reality? :dunno:

Anyway, she's looking good.

Dont know the exact amounts. I bought the Weitec GTN coilovers and the rears are on the middle setting and the fronts are untouched from out of the box.

Going to lower the back a bit more as there is still a fair bit of free space. But the fronts rub slightly on hard cornering.

As for tyre sizes cant remember off the top of my head as bought them end of last year. Will check later and let you know the full spec.

Haha funnily enough i thought the same, the decals look nice in the pix but not so nice in the flesh. Have started to remove the driver's side rear quarter one, just need to finish the job. I am looking to change the colour but am now quite liking the original silver/blue colour.

Does anyone know what the actual name of the silver/blue is? As i need to get some touch up paint if i am going to keep this colour.

Thanks for the comments

Paint, engine and gearbox details should be on a sticker in the boot similar to this.

This one had a DX engine with a 4Y type gearbox and was painted L90E.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the heads up OMR

Will check later, didnt know if there was a name for the colour as well as a paint code. Was looking in Halfords on saturday out of curiousity but didnt see anything similar.

they look better in the pix than they do in the flesh (IMO), they will need to come off anyway as i'm thinking of changing the colour.

Thanks for that. :good:

Re the paint, as OMR says the info sticker inside the boot will give you the code assuming it is still legible ... they're just printed stickers. Good place to link the two together is here ...

Hard to tell with the lighting in tour photos, but for an 1989 model Flash Silver or Sapphire metallics look most likely.

As for getting touch up or rattle cans I'd personally give Halfords a miss. Armed with the paintcode you should be able to get these from your local VW dealer. Can't lay my hands on the receipt but I bought these a few months back from mine. The 150ml cans were under £10 each and they do a neat little touch-up pencil for a few quid too ...

Are you suggesting that my quality pics taken from a mobile phone in the local service station isnt adequate for giving an exact paint code :hehe: :hehe:

thanks for the link, looking at the onscreen colour swatches and the image i think it is possibly sapphire metallic. Will double check the boot sticker later.

thanks for all the help and input

Rear tyres are 205/45/15
Front tyres are 195/50/15

Turns out the paint is the Sapphire Metallic, well thats what the boot sticker says.

Plus is also good to know that it hasn't been in a rear end shunt :yup:

On the link supplied by The Cpt there is a photograph link as well showing a stunning G plate similar to yours.
I nearly missed the link and just clicked on it by accident.
From what you are saying your paint code must be LY5V ?????????

OMR that G plate example is a minter indeed. LY5V is the code, will order some from my local stealers.

After much tooing and froing i finally managed to haul myself up to Worcester to pick up a Storm interior (front and rear seats with 4 x door cards). The seats are blue and the door cards are beige but they are to be stripped back of their cracked surface, fed, cleaned, repaired and then re-dyed) Going to be starting this tonight.
Will post up pix of the before, reworking and after.

Also, just had the sills repaired as they were an advisory on the MoT.

Will be driving up to Stanford Hall on Sunday, anybody coming from down south fancy having a Rocco convoy?

Finished the interior over the weekend. A lot longer than i thought. 3 whole days to do it, 46 man hours to finish. Feel like i have gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson

This is how the interior was

Here is the Storm interior as i bought it:

All fitted into car

Just the soft part of the dash to do now in the same colour along with the gear gaitor and the interior is all done.

Then on to the exterior and the boot inner.
