I have a 1990 1.8 GT (EX engine code) and have the stalling issue. You know the one, idles and revs ok at standstill but stalls after a mile or so when driving, then a pain to start but starts again if left alone for 5 mins then has the repeating issue again.
Items replaced so far are:
DIS/ECU unit thingy
fuel filler pipe
fuel pump
fuel reservoir/return valve
weber carb
in-line fuel filter
coil
basically the electrics all seem ok and sparking well so have ruled that out.
watching the fuel entering the inline fuel filter is very slow and seems very weak, it is not even filling up a quarter.
Have opened the fuel sender hatch and taken the fuel sender unit out and cleaned out any rust, tank itself looks very clean and has a few rust bits floating about, have pulled those out with a magnet and placed a magnet in there.
Blew compressed air threw the fuel lines and fuel sender to ensure all possible debris and rust is removed. Put all back together again and the fuel flow is still very slow.
My question is: is there an inline fuel pump that pumps the fuel along the lines or is it simply the one that is in the engine bay that pumps the system? As i was expecting to see on on the fuel sender unit.
I have had a quick look under the car and the fuel lines look very corroded but cant seem to see an electric pump anywhere. Looking online seems to mention two different types of pump, a lifter and an electrical. Excuse my stupidness as this may be a really easy answer to someone but i am looking for some experienced input. It seems to me as though the fuel isnt being delivered quick enough, but the return pipe seems to flow quite quickly with alot of air bubbles in. So am wondering if its a vacuum issue or a pump issue.

Try the in-tank fuel lift pump, it is located under the tank inspection plate, attached to the fuel gauge sender. The filters on these can become blocked with rust. New pumps are about 25 quid from GSF.

Mine did this, I just bypassed the fuel reservoir and ran the fuel line from the pump direct to the carb. Ran perfect after that

Do you have a pic of what this pump looks like?
I took my fuel gauge sender out and there didnt seem to be a pump attached to it?!?!?!

I thought it was only injection models that had a lift pump... I think the carbed cars have an inline pump and that's it.

Correct the pump is mechanical on your car will be on the front down low near the oil filter.
Could be some sort of blockage/dirty jet even faulty pump which can be bought I believe from the likes of GSF. Check out my thread here..

Have you changed the inline fuel filter,these are prone at times,I aways carry one in the boot, and put some magnets in the petrol tank, and try to keep a full tank,

Pulled the fuel system apart last night to check for the rust issue.
Blew some compressed air through the fuel regulator/return and a nice cornflake size piece of rust came out. hopefully that is what was causing the fuel starvation problem and was pushing most of the fuel back to the tank.
I also checked the rubber carb mount and that was all nice and tight.
So now just waiting to see if all ok now once i can get the connection of the new braided hoses sort (see separate topic) and having put on a new fuel filler pipe, checked tank for rust and blown all the pipes in the system to clear any clogs.
