Potentially a large number of causes - these could all be symptoms of the same fault, or they could be individul faults.

Best plan is to start with the basics - is the engine getting sufficient fuel? Is it getting a strong spark? Is it getting sufficient airfeed? Those are the three things that make an engine run, essentially, so if one or more of those are lacking, it will make the engine run poorly.

Once you've identified the underlying symptom (spark, fuel or air), you can then start checking the associated systems to see which part is causing the problem. For example if the spark is weak, check plugs, leads, distributor, coil, ignition amplifier etc. If the engine is starved of fuel, check the lift pump, main pump, fuel relay, fuel filter, metering head, injectors, etc.

Some more fault finding for you before diagnosis, I think - can you give us more precise symptoms at all?

cheers for the reply

the car starts fine from cold but as soon as it warm and you leave it for a few minutes it wont start very well takes about 20 secs to start.

how do you check all the pressures are correct?

Sounds typical of a bad or failing fuel relay. It's definitely worth replacing it - I had the exact same symptom for a while, and eventually the relay carked it and the car wouldn't start.

To expand, the cause is the fuel relay getting hot when the car's running, and breaking down internally; you thus have trouble starting the car from hot. Mine would turn over and over and over, and never catch. Once it's cold again it will usually function normally, but whilst hot, it will work intermittently.

bensspares on here should be able to help you out with a replacement unit if necessary - have a look at his For Sale thread.

Check for air leaks....spray WD40 on the hose from the metering head to the throttle body. If the idle changes, its drawing in unmetered air which will make it run badly.
