I love stories like this (and have rescued a few myself!), this is what the Register is all about. Nice one :ok:

I don't think I've ever had one that didn't have the sticker in the boot in decent condition. Despite the very practically-sized boot (you can get a surprising amount of stuff in there) I don't think many Sciroccos have seen heavy use for hauling stuff around - I suspect not many people buy a coupé for that purpose.

Nice find, and well done for saving it. These cars still make great economical transport if they're looked after, and are retro cool to go with it. I get loads of people coming up to me saying "I used to have one of those, and I miss it (apart from the brakes)".

Hope it serves you well. Has it got a weber carb on it, or still the original pier burg?

If you get a heat gun on the bumpers, it should help bring them back to black a bit.

Love these stories, fantastic stuff. i hate to see projects where someone buys the car with good intentions only to throw it in a lock-up and forget about it: this is what it's all about, getting straight to it. nice work!

Have a look at this topic from Mark H if you want to give those standard steelies a bit of va va voom (ie repainted without having to take the tyres off)

Fantastic story. Looks like the best £50 car any of us are likely to find. :hi:

As for the sticker, like people have said they're are quite a few knocking around that are legible. I'd say though that it might imply the mileage is genuine as it could be a sign of low usage. Mind you having said that there may well be some high milers out there that still have readable stickers too. :dunno:

Regardless, that sure is a bargain find!

:beers:

im afraid to say it but i do have a long term project in a lock up that has been left for some time, but having found this for next to nothing the escort can be sold so i can now afford paint for my "proper" :nerner: VW its looking a bit sorry for its self as just a chassis.

as for the bumpers on the gt i have only given them a quick wipe over so far and dont think they are too far gone a clean and polish should do it.

just on the hunt for insurance now seems very reasonable to insure as well always a bonus!

I have never taken my log book to the Post Office for a tax disc, just insurance and MOT?

Agree with Ian's reply.
Tax with a Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement – in person or by post

You can tax in person at any Post Office® branch that issues tax discs.

You will need to take:

Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement
insurance certificate or cover note – must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
valid MOT certificate - if the car or motorcycle is over three years old - must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
the payment for vehicle tax (not needed if your vehicle is exempt from paying vehicle tax)

You can also tax at a DVLA local office or by post to selected Post Office® branches.

You will need:

Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement
a completed V10 'Vehicle licence application'
insurance certificate or cover note – must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
valid MOT certificate - if the car or motorcycle is over three years old - must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
the payment for vehicle tax (not needed if your vehicle is exempt from paying vehicle tax)

The New Keeper Supplement can only be used for taxing at the Post Office for two months from the date you bought your vehicle. However, the DVLA Local Office will accept it for taxing up to thirteen months from your purchase date. If it’s out of date, you’ll need to apply for a Registration Certificate in your name – please see Taxing without a Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement’ below.

I'm assuming you do not have the "New Keeper Supplement" as the "old Chap" you bought it from has "lost it" ?????

That's right no v5 or v5c all I have is a sorn declaration. hopefully if I can get hold of him he will be able to find something. Otherwise it will be quickest if I pay him to order a new one in his name then take the v5c bit of a faff but seems the only way round it.

If you tax it online the tax disc will get sent to the registered keeper so assuming he is the registered keeper it will get sent to him, have a word with him and see if he is happy doing this then you can either collect the disc from him if local or have him post it on to you

afraid thats a no go as well, you have to have either a logbook number or a renewal number to tax online.

i managed to talk to the previous owner at the weekend he is going to spend the week looking for the v5 and if it hasn't turned up by friday hes going to ring for a replacement.

also someone asked what carb it has. i had a look today and it still has the original pier burg carb with the green vacum bottle, the previous owner said the carb had a rebuild a few months before it was taken of the road.

You don't need to wait for the current owner to do it. You can submit a form for a new V5C in your name - they'll just want details like when you took ownership of the vehicle, same as if you fill in an existing form.

I've done this before and had absolutely no problems. You'd want to make sure you have a receipt from the chap you bought it from to confirm that he has sold it to you, but it's not necessary as far as the DVLA are concerned - the V5C doesn't confirm ownership, just who the registered keeper is. These are different things legally (although often they are the same person).

You need to complete a V62 and post it off, which you can find here:

^^ ^^ ^^ I have done this too.

Also, if you have a DVLA office that is fairly local, you can pop in and fill out the form in person. Tends to get it into the system slightly quicker. You still have to wait for the V5 to be posted to you from Swansea though.
