Mines split, does it just screw off? tried gently to screw off but didnt budge

yes should just screw off. You might need to put a bit of force behind it tho.

Yep anti-clockwise - I tried using a large set of mole grips but they damage the leather and slide around it also...

Perhaps someone glued it on when they bought one of those hand brake locks before you owed the car. The lock used to fit to the hand brake and the gearstick and they used to come with some glue to stop you undoing the gear knob and removing the lock. Might explain why you cant undo the gear knob..
