project 20v has begun :D
hey all,
well i killed the gtx, so was going to put a kr in it, but decided while it was all out and was going to be doing some work i'd stick a 1.8t 20v in it :D bought the engine this week, just been stripping it down to the bare necesities, get the old engine out tomoz and start getting things going :)
any1 know if a rocco has had a 20v put in b4? be interested to see what they did and any obstacles i might encounter :/
will keep here updated with pics and so on :)
cheers

ive got one
good to see someone else doing the conversion as its so suited to the rocco!
needless to say if you need any pics, advice etc just ask and ill try my best
a few pointers:
fitting - theres plenty of room under there!!! ive never really been stuck for space at any stage, as im sure your aware its custom mounts all round except front or can be bought from caddy forum, front one mounts straight on but you may need longer bolts for starter motor, drivers side one is fairly easy, i just welded about an inch of extra steel along top of standard mount and then drilled the holes where they where needed, gearbox side one i hacked the standard one apart and then rewelded it - hard to explain but will try get you some pics! the rear one ive done isnt the best so is getting redesigned so cant help you with that im afraid
ecu - you going standalone or oem?, ive gone oem but used full mk4 wiring loom (lights, engine, dash etc) but you only need key/transponder, clocks and ecu.
gearbox - plenty of options, iv used 02j i think (mk4 golf 1) so i could keep dual mass flywheel for oem feel, one thing to check is not all shifters are the same as the one i was trail fitting caught on brake master cylinder, but the one on it now doesnt (can get you part number if you want) also if go this route you need to get some 100mm gearbox flanges (from 20v n/a golf or a3)
hydraulic clutch - only really needed if using o2j box but owell will explain my way around it anyway just incase
i actually just welded a full clutch pedal system in place to the steering column and brake box etc, strengthened it and then ran the hydraulic inlet pipe to the master cylinder through the scutttle panel to a small resivour i got from a toyota supra i think, then just ran the pipe from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder mainly throught the inside and at the flexi drilled hole through bulkhead for it.
gear shifter - once you have the old one out its rather easy to see how to go about this, i ran it through the car as ive mounted the whole lot inside car and cut donw the shifter as im running the mk4 dash and needed bit more room, but most place it under the car for a much better oem look,
rad - ive used a mk3 16v rad (will double check with part numbers if req as not 100% sure) and is direct fit and just has the inlet/outlet on drivers side,
intercooler - theres plenty of room for this as the slam panels are massive, just a bit tight with piping running out from them but all depends on which 1.8t your using! im using a saab intercooler on mine which i won on ebay for cheap haha but more than upto the job!
downpipe - can be bought but i made in bout half a day! just lots of lining up/checking/lining up/marking/lining up checking/welding
think ive covered most things but probs missed out on something big
im using an AGU and 02j gearbox from a 99 golf
engine should be coming out for a bit of clean up and going back in before tatton park so if you need any pics should be able to get you some of all parts or if makes it there and your going come over for chat and good look through it
really need to update my build thread!
