trying something different now. ;-)

Post by mk2moo »

Well i have been thinking of getting a project car to keep myself busy and learn more. I finally bit the bullet and went and bought another rocco scala from a lovely family in the yorkshire area. I proudly took delivery of this car today (Big thanks to Jon for trailering it to me) and promptly got it put on the drive ready to get going with it. The car itself has not been on the road since 2004 due to a corroded sump. So the main points are checking the vital areas such as brakes and getting to engine all cleaned, new gaskets etc. i got straight under the bonnet and started pulling everything apart ready to get everything cleaned up and sprayed in gloss black. I am concentrating on the engine at the min so I can get it running, it wants to fire up, but I do not want it to till its got a new sump and full service. The interior is in very very good condition, no cracked dash, no ripped seats etc and still has the usual rocco smell, that every rocco I have had and been in has got lol. Right i think it is time to stop typing and start getting a few pics linked up. This car is going to be a resto and not going to be modded at al. I want it as original as can be, i have got the red one for experimenting haha.

List of things to do:
Engine strip and rebuild
Bay clean and touch up where needed
wheels need re-furbing
Brake need stripping cleaning and replacing where needed
interior needs a valet to just give it a cleaner look
body work needs re-spraying in some parts, such as bonnet.
Doors need bit of rust treatment and re-spray
Check exhaust- replace where needed
MOT and TAX

Then choose whether to keep or sell.

A few pics from when i got it, and part way through engine strip.

One thing worth checking is the fuel filler neck at the top under the rear arch for rust and holes before you start the car and put on a new fuel filter. Once dirt gets in the fuel its a right pain to clean it out.

Good luck with the project.

i was then starting to check the state of calipers and sus components. After about half an hour of scrubbing and cleaning it felt like p ing it down.

Well been getting bits and bobs done. Goin france for two weeks tomorrow so have needed to watch the pennies. So far ive got the engine bicely cleaned up. Just the back of the bay that needs a clean. However i need a new throttle body and accelerator cable. Keep forgettin to pm members back who have offered me the parts.
Image
more bits to clean but it runs without any nasty noises so im pleased at the min.

Right so the last few days iv been doing some of the body. Has quite a few small rust spots on the doors and soooooo many stone chips literally everwhere on the car. Image
There are a lot more patches but forgot to take pic :).

As you can also see the wheel is in primer. Ive so far got 3 in their first coat. Iv decided not to polish them and go for the painted route. Going to be done in a lovely bright metaluc silver with brilliant black recesses. I think they will look good. They need wet sanding and then few more coats, but this wont be done till i get back from my hols. Im hoping to have it all done by the end of next month. And then will be up for sale, along with my red one maybe.

Few pics of how it stands.

Not got too much done recently as money is tight. So its more about getting it cosmetically good. Iv near enough got all the whhels done just tyres to sort. Heres a pic.
Image
also been getting panels all smooth and painted. The passenger door had damage from attempted theft, so sported a nice dent and hole around the handle.
Image
here it is after pulling back out, giving it a going over with the grinder to get rid of rust, very light skim of filler, high build yhen spray. The paint match is excellent.
Image
Also got the drivers door done.
Before:

After:

they just need a great going over with the cutting compound and polish.

I would love to keep her, but that is only possible if the gathering of job interviews goes well this week and ends up in employment. If so then the kit will be coming off and things will be getting more interesting. Hopefully i will be able to keep it though.

I was able to get abit more done today, mostly consisted of cosmetic work though. Got all the wheels done now, they have lifted the look of the car so much.
Image
Image
Also started to polish the door catches as they were covered in crap and looked old.
Going to finish these off tomorrow and get then nice and shiney.
Image
Also started working on tailgate rust patches, no pic till tomorrow though.

All im doing now is trying to get it better looking we veryday whilst im trying to sell it. Needs must.
