new shoes...

hey,

I had a leaking rear wheel cylinder and so i bought a new one and replaced it, i thought i may as well replace the brake shoes while i was at it, as they looked a bit thin and were covered in brake fluid...

Ive done the drivers side, all back together, but when i went to put the drum on, it was very stiff and needed quite a bit of force to get over the shoes, now it doesnt turn at all... i cant see how i would adjust the shoes closer together... nothing in the haynes says anything about adjusting... im a little confused...

Ive yet to do the passenger side to see if i have the same situation....

is there something im doing wrong?? or will the shoes just adjust themselves once i get it back on its wheels??

there is a section re adjusting the rear brakes, its under handbrake adjustment heading.

sounds to me like you havnt adjusted the handbreak, ( back the cables off as far as possible without the nut comming off as this can be a ball ache putting the nuts back on lol.
did you set the adjustment wedges so they were as far up as possible. these automaticaly adjust the rear shoes.

yes i set the wedges right up... ill try slackening off the handbrake as you say! thanks!

In my experience, this problem is down to the wedge, even if you think you've got it in the right place.

Whilst you have the drums apart, check the condition and wear of the handbrake cables, as it might make sense to change these at the same time.
Nothing more annoying than finding the handbrake cable going, shortly after replacing shoes and cylinders !!!

the passenger side went fine, all together and the drum slid on with ease, handbrake cable adjusted up nicely, the drivers side loosened, but is is still binding ever so slightly however much i slacken the cable... the wedges are both as far up as they can go... :/

are both the nuts in a similar position on cable threads ????... if one of the cables is more streached than the other, sometimes 1 nut is near the top and the other is half way down the thread.this may explain why you cannot back off 1 side of the shoes.

both wheels should spin freely. apply the hand break 3 clicks and the rear wheels should be locked....if it takes more than 4 clicks then this indicates a streached cable.

yer the drivers is higher up than the passengers... i set it as the haynes said, two clicks and tighten to just binding, then pull it up and they are locked... think its deffo more than 3 clicks... new cables for me then??

that explains it then, i had a thought that the passenger cable had streched a tad, hence the slight binding of the drivers side.
