oil warning light problem
when i turn on the ignition there is no oil light indicator on the dash but when i start the engine the oil light begins to flash should it not flash when you put the ignition on and go out when you start the engine ,its an 1984 storm i bought to restore and it was like this when i bought it ,i fitted an oil pressure guage and it reads over 70 lbs/inch2 when i start the car so the oil pressure is ok.should the oil light be on when you turn the ignition on,there are two oil senders one above the oil filter and one on the back of the head,i fitted the oil pressure guage to the one on the head,is that correct,is it a wiring fault or a sender fault, can you test the senders to see if they are ok,any help will be much appreciated, regards john

Re: oil warning light problem
yeh thats the wrong way round. Should come on with the ignition and go off when started like you say. Thats the correct sender, the one on the oil filter is for oil temp on the MFA. If youve fitted a gauge then i wouldnt worry about it working too much as you can keep an eye on it that way. According to what I have read on here the oil light is on its on bit of L shaped circuit board at the back of the clocks and they are very prone to short circuiting. Mine comes on randomly with vibrations in the car, usually fixed by a good thump. Does the oil light stop coming on when you unplug it?
Re: oil warning light problem
What have you done with the wire from the original sender in the head? That is the wire that is connected to the dash warning light.
Have you removed the original sender completely?
Does the pressure gauge sender have one or two connector pins?

Re: oil warning light problem
Try swapping the wiring back and seeing if that solves it. If it does, then you need to leave it there and route the pressure guage to the sender on the oil filter housing (which is where it's normally connected IIRC.)johnsm wrote:I fitted the oil pressure guage to the one on the head
Hope that helps :)
Re: oil warning light problem
sorry i,m a bit late getting back to you guys, but the storm is at my daughters house, the car has had this problem since i bought it,to answer some of your questions, when i fitted the oil pressure guage i used an adaptor and fitted a new sender as well ,so the wire is conected to the new sender, when i disconnect the wire which is blue and black there is no flashing oil light when i turn on the ignition, just the same as when its connected ,but when i start the the engine there is no flashing oil light, and when the wire is connected the oil light flashes when i start the engine as i explained at the start, and also, there is only one connection on the sender unit, when the ignition is on the the wire is live,i hope you can make sense of what i have written, regards john

Re: oil warning light problem
The oil pressure sender is on the head, oil temp on filter housing.....
with ignition on earth the pressure wire to head, light should flash normaly. if this doesnt then its the sender/contact thats at fault.
if the pressure gauge shows there is oil pressure then the engine is ok.
check the wiring/ board on the back of the speedo especialy the oil pressure light area also check that 2 multiplugs are making a good contact before you disconnect and remove it, I think its the bottom right 1& is the 1 that has all the dash functions coming through it, sometimes a jiggle here can resolve the problem.

If it is not broken, Do not fix it !!!
