My first Scirocco had that. My solution was to not store valuable things in it!
A serious solution would be some strong glue maybe? That's what I'd do.

There is no sign of damage to the lock or glovebox lid. There is a small black clip present but doesnt seem to do anything much.
Is there a few parts missing? I'm sure its a common problem which must have a cure?

Re: Mk2 Glovebox Locks - WHY DO THEY FALL OFF? FIX AVAILABLE?
Mine's got a useless plastic clip too. (and screwdriver imprints in the dash below the box lid from where it was levered open) ... I reckon there should be a plastic "frame" that the lock assembly fits through, then that clip (that becomes usess once the "frame" is broken!) holds it in place.
Assuming that's how it's supposed to be, there's little wonder they're all broken. To fix, I'd chop a piece of sheet metal out that replaces the frame and screw it to the inside of the lid.

The lock should slide through a hole and the clip secures it in place.
However, the bottom part of the hole is just a slim piece of plastic that over time snaps off so that the lock can just slide down.
As long as you can bridge the gap without interfering with the clip they are fixable and you don't really notice the repair.
I fixed mine with some 1mm wire painted black and a couple of small holes drilled into the plastic either side, bent it to shape, pushed it through and jobs done.
