scrap or sell?
scrap or sell?
i've got a 92 scala that's been parked up for over a year now and i'm not sure what to do with her so i'd like your advice please as you seem to know what you're talking about..(i thought of advertising here but clueless on asking price so didn't wanna be laughed outta forum!)
she's got over 100,000 on the clock, passed last MOT ok although she's gonna need work on suspension, leccy windows & central locking and the stainless steel exhaust system needs checking too...a few small dings here and there but clean under bonnet and body (mechanics words, not mine!) i also have a set of 4 extra alloys as well as the ones on her...i thought she may make a nice project, still a little attached to her so don't really wanna weigh her in but she's just sat there (how did it come to this?!? she used to be my baby!...)
so what would you do, scrap or sell?

No mechanic by any means, but I'd have to say sell rather than see her get broken up. Never nice to see one less on the road.
And I'm sure there are folks on here that could easily turn her around?
Mind you if you did decide to break her up those leccy windows and door cards sound interesting!

Re: scrap or sell?
You'd probably make more selling than scrapping (unless you're breaking it yourself - but then you have to be prepared to wait for the parts to sell bit by bit). Reasonable, repairable Sciroccos with no MoT seem to make around £200 on eBay at the moment if they're listed with a low start price and no reserve - still the best way to get the best price for your car.
If you don't have the time/inclination to fix it yourself, it might be worth getting a quote from a garage to do the necessary work, then you'd maybe make more selling it as a usable car with an MoT.
I agree that if it's repairable and basically just needs mechanical attention, it's a waste to break it.

It's a saveable classic so sell dude, seen too many good wee motors get cashed in latly.
Mk2 and MK3 Polos are practically non existant over here now because of that!

Re: scrap or sell?
IMHO, you should only consider scrapping a car if the body is rotting, even then they are still not too far gone.
Every thing you list is easy really, or at least the perfect opportunity to upgrade mate.
You mention suspension, perfect time for coilies/lowering springs and shocks
The exhaust system, not sure what the issue is but a replacement Jetex system is about £220 I think? Failing that Powerflow will custom make you a system for similar money.
Your two remaning problems are most probably easy fixes, most leccie things are to be fair. Don't give up on the old girl mate!
Just my 2p, your car at the end of the day just a shame to see older cars getting broken for spares or at worse scrapped

Re: scrap or sell?
Got to agree with the other guys, you only scrap when you can sweep the remains into a bin.!!!!!
Re: scrap or sell?
thanks for taking the time out to read and comment guys, i just wanted some 'impartial' advice and that's what i got!
i do not have the time or money to do her up i'm afraid, have no desire to break her and i really didn't want to weigh her in so i'm going to pull my finger out and sell (private as opposed to ebay). as it is, it grieves me to see her sat there on the drive doing nowt, she's served me well and deserves better.
my main worry was the cost of doing her up would be a bit of false economy but all it takes is the right person i guess, also pleased the jobs i mentioned aren't really major ones...she's fitted with a phat stainless steel exhaust up to the manifold (?) and it's been knocked about going over speed bumps..central locking's down to me having to remove immobiliser after last fob snapped off keys and got crushed by traffic..
contrary to all above, i am a good driver, look after my cars and love mk2 roccos
i just hang my head in shame whenever i look at mine so fingers crossed i'll find someone to love her more and make her purr again!
once again, thanks for sharing your opinions x

Re: scrap or sell?
Glad you've decided to try and sell her ... here's hoping you find her a good home!

Re: scrap or sell?
think i may struggle a little, mileage is nearer 200,000 mark
trying and failing miserably with uploading pics, file too big!

I always re-size pictures by:dmon wrote:trying and failing miserably with uploading pics, file too big!
Right clicking on the file.
Then go to the option of;
- Send to: Mail Recipient
It'll then ask you if you want to make pictures smaller.... it normally re-sizes it perfectly for uploading on this or other site's via PhotoBucket.
(The above is based on using a windows computer, not iphone or Mac...)
Hope this helps.
