Help Oil Leak - Urgent

Post by DannyH »

hi Guys

my 'rocco has been off the road for a few months as it had an oil leak.

i wasn't too bothered as i figured i could do all the little bits that need doing and put it back on the road in the spring. :dunno:

Disaster has struck and my g/f's clio is goosed as the timing belt snapped so we might need to get the 'rocco back on the road double quick! :crying:

She needs a car for work.

i wasn't sure where the leak is but suspected the oil cooler gasket/ o ring.

i had a quick look today and i'm now wondering if it's coming from the sensor on top of the oil cooler? is that possible? :dash:

please see photo

any help would be gratefully received :good:

ps i've got a chance of a W reg Passat TDi well used around 200000 miles for £100 no tax or MOT the guys had it from new is it worth considering? :dunno:

ta again

so there's a sudden urgency to get the rocco fixed why exactly?

the best way to work out where the leak is coming from is to clean it all off with degreaser so there is no oil, then run it up so you can see where the fresh oil is escaping from.

worth considering, but not without looking at it first. don't just buy it on spec, at that price there will be something wrong with it!

tried that a while ago with no joy, mind you it's changed since then. was just wondering if it's possible that it could be the sensor as there is fresh oil on it? The last time i started it up there was oil running down (a lot) right below it? Today there didn't seem to be any flowing down but i noticed the rubber cap from the sensor had been pushed up (i removed it for the photo) and it was covered in fresh oil :dunno:

I pretty much trust the guy he was our neighbour for 6 months till he moved in with his g/f a few months back. He's had the car since new and i would think he's looked after it reasonably well as he is self employed and travels all over he only gave it up as he got a great deal on a Land Rover (the 4 wheel drive is convenient for his work). it's been sitting in the car park for 2 or 3 months and i tried it today and it started 1st time. He was gonna scrap it as he's to busy at the moment to worry about it. :dunno:

hi,dont mean to butt in but,as its urgent then i will,

Looks to me like the plastic has perished and cracked allowing oil to escape from the switch (very common)..replace the switch and the o ring and all will be well.....

unless the leak is like a severed artery then as long as you keep an eye on the oil level and carry some spare oil you should be able to use the car, oviously if the oil light comes on, shut the motor down and check the oil level..

this should be the answer.

is this the switch you would replace if you were putting in an oil pressure gauge?

I'd say that's very possibly the case, they seem to go porous as time goes on.

They're only about £3-4 from GSF, they're colour coded, but the new ones aren't, so check the pressure engraved on the side of the hex to be certain it's the right one before fitting.

sounds like it's worth a punt, but i still reckon there will be something wrong with it. even if it's a complete basket case, it'd be worth 750 to a grand with a full ticket on it, depending how cheeky you are

When I changed the oil on my KR engine, the same sensor went tits within 2 days of changing the oil and was literally pumping it out. Couldnt believe it when my garage told me.

Hi Nate

you were right it was pretty bad needing £300 in bits plus labour and mot, but as i said the guys sound he let me get it checked out 1st. :yup:

so no Passat but i'm not out anything as the guy in the garage that his g/f sent me to doesn't want any money for looking at it. :ok:

looks like Tommy (my 'Rocco) will be back on the road in the next few days :groove: :pilot:
