Re speedo issue

Post by mikeki »

 Hi

Does anyone know what I have done wrong with my project for putting a MK2 1.8 engine into a MK1 using the 5 speed box and an adapted cable with the plastic gear at the box end, and a square plastic drive going into the back of the conical speedometer of the MK1 dash. It all seems to fit nicely, only problem is the calibration seems all over the place. It is telling me that I am doing 40mph when realistically it can only be doing 20mph. What have I missed???? The plastic drive on the MK1 seems almost identical to the MK2 going into the gear box, there was just a different fixing on the speedometer, plastic for the MK2, as against a metal fixing for the MK1. UUUUMMMMM ?

Anyone got an idea, or is it back to the drawing board, I don't fancy getting nicked by a camera or chappy with a speed gun.The adapted cable was made up by an outfit (Speedograph) in Nottingham, and it looks like they have done a good job.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

You need to check that you have the correct plastic drive gear on the gearbox end of the cable.

There is a red one which has 15 teeth and a milky-grey/white one that has 16 teeth.

What is your gearbox code?

:shocking: Hi Pete

Thanks for the message, the plastic gear is red, not sure on gear box code will try and find it. The people at Speedograph reckon they can adapt the cable with a corrector drive inserted on the cable, but need to know how the speedo head is calibrated. All good stuff. Was the white unit from a MK1 and the red for a MK2 ? Thought it looked to good to be true.

Thanks for the help

Mike,

The red one is for a MK2, my Storm has "eaten" 2 of these in the last few months. VW still sell these about £3 odd. The latest one has been in a month and so far so........!!!

If you look underneath the engine you will see a flat area on the bottom of the gearbox casing where it attaches to the engine. Your gearbox code should be stamped on that.
