Rear wheel spacers, a couple of straight queries

Post by andy69 »

Hello. I'd like to experiment with some wheel spacers and really would like some practical advice from anyone who really knows. I've already done a couple of searches on here about the pros and cons, and sizes etc. My rims are 15" BBS RA's and as with everyone else's are too tucked in for my liking, so; should I expect any excess wheel bearing wear? Has anyone got pics of 5/10mm spacers on their car? Anyone got any fitting advice? What should I be looking for in terms of reputable makes and costs? Lots of queries I know but any knowledgable advice would be welcome, cheers Andy

running 20mm on mine, the fronts are the type that bolt to the hub and the wheel then bolts to the spacer, my rears bolt the wheel and spacer to the hub.

Had no problems thus far but the bearings are new so would replace them anyway if you are going bigger than 10mm imo

Ours was bought with 10mm spacers on the front only! Very weird, must have been for clearance rather than looks, as the wheels were just thrown on rather than buy new tyres.
Anyway, they were the non hub-centric ones, so the bolts for the wheels hold everything together. They were horrendous, and wobbled like nothing I ever knew!! Maybe the wheels needed balancing but to be honest, I don't like the idea of the wheels being held on only by the bolts, without the hub holding it in situ. It puts a lot of extra stress on them.
Rears of course are less of an issue as they are not driving or steering your car, but I have had wheels on golf a few years back with no spigot rings fitted, and you could feel vibration on hard cornering (which a mk2 golf should love!).
Our car felt fantastic with the original steels back on... and 'tuck' is the way forward !

Bill runs spacers on the rear of his red gtx - check the shots of that on here. I'll add some pics later.

I used 20mm just because of the offset of the wheels as they were hitting my coilovers, they sit just off the inside of the arch but still hit the arches on hard cornering or horid bumps..for the look you have to pay the price lol..

Thank you for the photos chaps. It is quite a departure for me, as I'm usually 'Mr Originality', and don't get me wrong I love my motor, but the tucked in rims just don't look right to me. I'm pretty sure the extra width will give it more of a 'lowered' look too. Thanks again :beers:

I'm running 10mm spacers , wheels are 28 off set so 18 on the back, just to even up the fronts to back. :beers: car looks a bit pink on that last picture

Thanks for that Bill. I might experiment a bit with a couple of different sizes. Would you recommend a particular brand?
